Guess the grade of this supposed premium gem Jefferson war nickel graded by NGC. Here is a link to the Guess the Grade thread that just ended about this coin where the overwhelming majority thought the coin should grade MS65 5FS. I cn't see it going for much more that a 66FS. I am not quite a pessimistic as bahabully, but close. $50 - $100
I said $875, it would fit perfectly in a registry set with no pictures. I think the price will be high because, for 1943-P 5FS, 67 is a top pop coin.
I'd like to hear your take on the grading once this is over Lehigh96. I'm with bahabully and rlm but perhaps the others are right and the slab price prevailed.
PCGS suggests a price of $700 for a 67 FS. I'll guess you got it for a discount to that price, as is typical for NGC slabbed coins in this grade, so I'll guess somewhere around $600.
Mike, That comment disappoints me. Do you really think I would spend $600 on that dreck? For the record, I don't own the coin. If anyone was holding back their negative comments in order to spare my feelings, you may now commence firing! Paul
The chatter on the jawline is planchet flaws but the severe marks on Monticello are bag marks and IMO, limit the grade of the coin to MS65. The Heritage photos preclude any opportunity to evaluate the luster of the coin but we can still make a determination about the eye appeal. And my opinion is that this coin is ugly as sin and if it were up to me, I would dip the sucker. I was hoping that someone could find something redeeming about this coin that would change my mind.
I had no idea if you do or do not own it, but presumed you did. And I can't really call it dreck without seeing it in-hand. The coin looks pretty clean on the obverse, with two nicks on the reverse. Luster is a big unknown. And I would hope you know me well enough through these forums to know I don't hold back.
Okay guys, here it comes. This coin sold for $1,265 in the September 2010 Long Beach Sale. What I want to know is WHY? The majority of Coin Talkers think the coin is overgraded based on the photos and price it accordingly. The luster is a question mark due to Heritage's photo technique, but the surfaces are not worthy of the highest price ever realized for this date/mm. In addition, the eye appeal rivals that of coins that I would consider dipping. And lastly, two of these sold last year in Heritage auctions indicating that auction/registry fever should not have been a $1,000 factor especially since the coin is in an NGC holder. So I ask, what gives with the sale price of this coin? 1943-P Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67 5FS $1,265
Three guesses: Two suckers needed it for their registry set? The owner trying to set a price on a coin he hopes to sell elsewhere? The coin is more attractive in-hand.
Well those suckers can keep bidding on dreck like that. I have a real 1943-P MS67 5FS. Oh, and did I mention, it is a DDO ta boot! for the bargain price of $3K
The coin evidently was offered in a very competitive Sale . That said , I agree the coin was ( 1 ) over-graded (2) over-bid (3) will probably hold up in value considering the next grade up and being a top-pop for the grade. These are the types of Sales that infuriate me to no end.
