Good morning fellow collectors, On Sunday I bought this small coin box from a auction here in Iceland. I got it for 20 USD so it was a bargain. It´s not perfect but will do for now I have for some time now been looking for a coin cabinet. I have bought many and sold again due to dislike. The last box I bought was from lighthouse but it was not for me. This box will be a good place to keep my tokens till the day I find someone to build me the one I have in mind. It cant be done in Iceland as it´s mind blowing to get it build here price wise. So i´m looking for a way to do abroad. Best regards Siggi PS if anyone can spot the wood type I would appriciate the info
Just found out that this is made by Peter Nichols It´s the older type of the Marlet http://www.coincabinets.com/martlet.html SO i´m please beond belive
Nice little coin box Siggi and for $20 bucks you can't go wrong....super deal. I have been wanting to build a coin cabinet for sometime now.....but very undesided about the design of it. I have a few good idea's.... were one looks like a old time treasure chest on the outside and one that look more like a coin cabinet but with some nice carvings in the wood. I will someday get around to doing this.
It looks like a nice wooden coin box. Watch carefully for reaction with your coins. I would check the coins frequently and avoid putting any red copper near the box.
Thanks Gudni and Collect89, I now know the history of it. It´s aprox 20 years old. These boxes are known for good quality and the maker is one of the best around. Siggi
I have been admired (and wanted) Peter's work for some time. This is the one I want http://www.coincabinets.com/coronet.html And now I may be able to look forward to getting one. Problem is soon I'll need two of them. Until this time looking at his site he has always been for UK delivery on;y and he would not ship out of the country.
I have seen most of Peters cabinets, and all of them are very well made. I would think the reason for none UK shipping is because of handilng. I work at a express company and if the items like this are not handeled correctly they will break. I do understand him at a point but if you know someone in the UK that could back it well and you have the money to ship via express company you should be able to get if safely to your home.
The outer box is Mahogany. I am not sure what the trays are made of, but I also believe it to be Mahogany. Since I am also a Les Paul fan... I know my Mahogany. It's my favorite wood.
Don't coin cabinets have a serious problem with rubbing their contents? And what about offgassing from the wood/stain/varnish inside the cabinet?
"Offgassing" is now officially my favorite malapropism of the month. "Wow, Harold! Why is your gut making that juicy noise?", Martin asked. "Aw that's just mah taco offgassin after comin' in contact with Mountain Dew", replied the gassy Harold.
Yes, But the tokens that I have in these boxes have survived far worse condition then they are in this box. I would not put any coin that I would think would be harmed in them. As you can see I have one coin in airtite that should help the rubbing. I´m not afraid of off gasing. And you have to remeber that some major museums use coin cabinets made out of mahogany. It all depends on the material used in the boxes.
As Siggi has said, you can protect the coins from cabinet rub by putting them in Air-Tites. And mahogany is the only wood recommended for coin cabinets. Yes, it still puts off some gases but far, far less than other woods. While I love the idea of coin cabinets and think they are quite beautiful, as well as presenting a nice coin display, I would never own one unless it were made of inert materials. But that's my personal choice. I'd never put coins in albums either, but hundreds of thousands of collectors do that.
There was a company in Iceland that used to make coin folders here in the day and they had more PVG then any thing I have come across by far. I have seen good collections look like a green house in the making. Always fun to read your posts btw, Knowlidge is key to everything in life.
