To be honest I would be leary of bidding on that coin. The wear pattern is very unusual and there is not enough detail to say if the coin is a sure fake or not.

It's not a rare coin or even a scarce coin. Nor is it an expensive coin even if it is genuine. I guess what I am trying to say is pass on this one and look for a better example.

The true secret to buying these coins safely and at a fair price is to buy them from respected and trusted dealers. I'd be happy recommend a couple for you.

I've got a few 2 reales and the wear pattern on the coin above looks like a typical low-grade Mexico City piece to me. A similar piece cost me a little more than $10 from a regular dealer.

About the only thing I can suggest to you is that you contact some of those sellers, explain to them what you want, and be patient. Other than that, go to coin shows and look for what you want.

But stay away, far away, from swap meets, flea markets, farmer's markets, pawn shops and the like. There are far more counterfeits of this type of coin out there than there are real ones. And most of the people in these kind of places wouldn't know a fake if it bit them.

Only buy these coins from reputable dealers, they will not knowingly sell you a fake. And if they ever get fooled, they'll back it up with a money back guarantee - for life.

I would suggest you contact Joel Anderson for the less expensive types of coins you are looking for. I have ordered from him before, and met him at an ANA show as well, and I think he's a pretty decent dealer.

There is nothing wrong with that coin IMHO. Looks like a nice original piece, maybe not high grade but not jacked with either. :)

I am bidding on an 8 reales coin on eBay, 1744 Mo, and am wondering what are the most common hallmarks of the fake 8 reales coins? I'm aware of some of the more obvious casting problems, but could surely be fooled. Is there a common set of year(s) or grade that is more likely to be fake? This one is 26.7 grams and is reportedly Blanchard certified.

The weight indicates there's a good chance the coin is fake. Minimum weight was 26.86. Other than that there are literally hundreds of things that can indicate a coin is fake.

Fakes abound in these coins. Do not buy them from anybody but a trusted dealer !

Here is a 2 reales coin in my collection. I'm suddenly suspicious of it, but really can't tell if it is fake or not. Any thoughts? I truly appreciate all of your knowledge.

Do you know the weight ? The edge looks a bit odd, but that might be your picture. The design is correct, but the surfaces of the reverse look like it might be a cast fake. And the 5 in the date isn't quite right either, the vertical leg is much too thick.

I'm not saying it is a fake, but I'd certainly be suspicious.
