I would like opinions on the authenticity of this 1862 Seated Liberty Dollar. I've traveled through the Far East on business for many years so I am familiar with their handiwork, particularly with the flood of fake Trade Dollars.

I've always found counterfeits to be like pornography, sometimes hard to describe but you know it when you see it.

This one is borderline for me. It weighs and sounds just like my Morgan and Peace dollars. This looks a bit high quality compared to what I've seen come out of China.

    Still...

I think what bothers me the most is the date and stars on the coin. They seem to "pop out" too much.

Welcome! It's alright but I think in hand it would scream out fake, alot louder than it does by the pic! On the reverse it looks like the talons are a bit too big. I'm not really familiar with this series so therefore I don't know when the "in God we trust" started so I will steer clear of that subject! Of course on your coin it's missing. On the reverse again, it seems to have something that doesn't belong there right above (one dol.). And the last thing are the denticles on the reverse, they just don't look uniform! Above the words (States of) the denticles look fine but that seems to be the only area.

Looks pretty fake to me too.

IGWT first appeared on Half Dollars in 1866 so that would be the correct reverse for an 1862 SLD.

In God We Trust started in 1866 on this series.

Actually, the "Robert" dollar is a no brainer.

This one is a bit of a head scratcher. I see some things that I don't totally like but overall the quality and the consistency of the correct features for the date are not what I would normally expect.

I think Hobo already made that clear. Regardless, the coin is fake.

I have N 1862 seated liberty and mine has the "united states of America" on the front but I don't know anything about coins that old cuz I'm new but I read that in 1960 that's when that motto moved from the back to the front.

In 1860, the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" was moved from the reverse (tails side) to the obverse (heads side) on the dimes and half dimes, but not on the larger denomination Seated Liberty coins.

Fake. Date, dentils, and stars all wrong, IMO.

I'm sure that United States of America has always been on the reverse for the dollar , even after they added the motto IGWT .
