These toned inside one of those large wood framed 20th century type sets. The morgan toned on the reverse, and the franklin on the front. I dig 'em.

I've got a Morgan and a Peace dollar in a 20th Century Type Set wood-frame display case that look just like your Franklin half on one side-- so I turned them around (with the reverses showing) a couple of years ago and am waiting to see if the obverses have toned.

OK, here are a couple of scans of the Morgan dollar-- 1921-S. The reverse was facing the cardboard back support in the 20th Century Type case for about 10 years. The obverse has been facing it for about 2 years:

Does being toned only on one side effect its value to those that collect toned coins?

For the toning lovers it sure does. Most would prefer both sides being toned, then next would be obverse toning, and finally reverse toning.

Yeah, I have one of those cardboard 20th Century holders in a frame...
Got it in the early 90s. The coins have all toned majorly on the sides facing the back, but the sides facing the glass have done nothing.
I made a point about a year ago to take the old coins out and replace them with untoned coins.
I also took another pane of frame glass and put behind the coins, between the cardboard and coins, so it doesn't happen again.
It is a tight fit, but the frame does close securely with the extra glass sandwiching the coins from both sides.
The toning is very intense, but it doesn't look natural IMO.

Here's what the whole 20th century set looks like:

Not to hijack the thread, but where can one buy the cardboard inserts for these new nowadays???
Like I said, I got mine around 1990 from a coin shop. I see them used on eBay, but would like to buy 2 new ones.
I want to mount them in a double frame that has the two sides hinged together, then put one set in obverse, while the other is displayed reverse.

    Why not try capital holders?

I searched Capitol and find only the plastic housings that screw together. ???
I'll have to check my cardboard insert, but I don't think it was Capitol...
If it was, they must be discontinued, because I can only find ones like it used on eBay.

I'll check again. Maybe I am missing something.

Not necessarily! You would be more apt to get a star (*) for beautiful toning on only one side rather than both if you submitted it for grading.

This is an example of the one I have, although they have been made in other colors than woodgrain, and depending on the year of manufacture, have different layouts... For example there are some without the SBA, some without the Bicentennials, and so on.
