Anyone ever see tiny silver spots on a copper coin? You have to see them through a magnifying glass. The spots actually look like small tiny crystallized silver deposits that came to the surface of the coin. I can’t post a picture because of was thinking of buying the coin and don’t have the actual coin. My concern is that the coin may have been cleaned and a result of cleaning the spots appeared. The coin is is not graded professionally, although it looks around MS63 +/- Anyone ever run across something like this?
Unfortunately I can’t, as mentioned earlier. Wish I could. I don’t own the coin I was thinking of buying it. If I do buy it I’ll post it then. But meanwhile, any thoughts….?
It would be difficult to tell exactly what the spots are from even a very large magnified photograph. Black discolorations on anything silver is normally just from oxidation. Just like silver ware dining utinsils turning black from exposure to the air. However, due to your discription of just spots forming, where as normal oxidation accurs all over a coin at the same time, it could be just about anything. Silver combines with Nitrates, Sulfates, etc. so it could be just about anything. Actually it could also just be dirt. You would actually have to have the coin and use a strong magnification to see what it MAY be. If dirt, it could just be washed off with a pure Acetone solution. If the beginning of toning only in spots, I'd be aware of where and what is next. In your case it would be pending the price whether to buy it or not.
