a few weeks ago, my mother went to the bank to see if they had any half dollars to buy to surprise me when i get home. The bank said that an elderly man had come in and turned in $30 rolls of halves . My mom recognized a few, because $10 of them were loose and then there was a $20 roll, she recognized the ones with "Walking Lady", as she put it into her own words, and knew that was a good sign. I got home and opened up the $20 first, there were; 23 Franklin Halves (oldest being a 1954), 10 Walking Liberty halves (oldest being a 1936), and 7 1964 Kennedy Halves! I WAS FREAKING OUT !!! Then, trying to come to my sences, i opened up an envelope full of the $10 worth of loose halves...they were ALMOST ALL 40% HALVES! with the exception of 3 or 4 1964 Kennedy's, and ONLY 1 1981 CLAD:u*meY:!!! ONLY 1 CLAD OUT OF $30 WORTH OF HALVES!!!! it was a complete dream-come-true! ...if u dont believe me, check out my YouTube video called The "COIN ROLL HUNTING Dream!!! ToNs oF SiLvEr!!!" ... heres the link!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhH0V71aqfM
Yeah, put up a youtube video and draw more attention to roll hunting so more people get into it and leave less finds for the rest of us. Good idea. That's a solid find, but there's been far, far better finds posted on this forum, including one just a few days ago in our favorite roll-searching thread. With all that said, congrats on the find, but you might want to be a little more discreet in the future.
Listen man...Im in it for the joy-of-the-hunt, and i think its TERRIBLE that you are just thinking about how much YOU will get in the rolls and how much YOU want to find it. I understand that this might not be the best find EVEEER, but for me it was a great find and i hate that you just put it down like that. There are MANY other cin roll hunters i know that post all of there videos on youtube to show how much fun they have SEARCHING THE ROLLS and not for what they find and the profitability! , you arent going to get very far in life if you just think of how little you might get out of a couple of bank rolls by me posting 1 video. :rollling:
Nice find! Too bad that since you posted this the entire world is following along and rushing out to the bank. I'm kidding. I have no idea why you were criticised for posting this.
I'm just saying, the more attention that people bring to roll-searching, the less likely they will be to find anything going forward. Why do you think roll-searching is becoming more and more popular now? Because people talk and brag...
i would have to kinda disagree with you. roll searching always had a certain popularity. some areas more than others. just because this one person had a great find and posted something on youtube, there will not be a huge impact. i wouldnt really stress it. its not like all the nice coins are going to disappear because of one post. i am sure if you found something like he did you would want to shout about it. i mean we have a whole thread that is hundreds of pages long about stuff just like this. dont freak out on the guy. :thumb:
I don't know. People will do what they want. If they don't roll search then maybe they prefer not to, and probably won't start. If people do already roll search then they will keep doing it. If someone who hasn't roll searched before sees a report like this and gets excited and decides to start, theres a very good chance that they will not find much like the OP's finds and probably stop roll searching if they lose interest. I wouldn't worry about a "run on the banks" for rolls especially since banks get rolls every single day numerous times from businesses and people getting rid of loose change. It's an ever-replenishing cycle and things are bound to pop up every once in a while.
Would you rather I rip him for his poor grammar, punctuation and spelling? And dude, if you think I'm in it for profit, you clearly don't pay any attention. Wouldn't be worth my time to go through cents like I do if it was purely for profit. I can't speak for where you guys live, but I've seen my silver findings, particularly with halves, drop like a rock over the past 3 months or so... there's just no halves around. that's not as much an issue as what the tellers are telling me... "Oh, someone picked up everything we had a few days back," or something of that sort. It is growing in popularity, at least around me, and it irks me, because I've done my best to not talk much about it.
Again people do what they want. He's a young guy, this is the internet. It's much easier to type quickly and not necessarily correctly. So if you did rip him for that it would accomplish nothing IMO. And if there is a half shortage in your area and it bothers you to the point of picking on a young collector excited about his finds, then maybe a trip a little further out every once in a while would suffice. And you basically said it yourself, you are not the only one who gets halves. That's the way it goes.
Congrats on your find, I'd love to find a lot of old one like that. Come join us in the roll searching thread.... http://www.cointalk.com/t10176-658/ Just checked....you've found us already.
Awesome find there! I've only found 40% silver halves in my roll searching. I would love to find anything Pre-JFK, maybe one day...
Congrats Man ! This is something that is not likely to ever happen again. Very few people today are unaware of the value of Silver and Gold coins largel;y because of TV advertisements about the value of them. I admit I felt sorry for the old man who likely had dementia or no family to take care of him that would turn in his silver for face. But hey, better you to get them than someone else, since he cashed them in anyway. I heard that a lot of old people are cashing in their coins to buy food and medicine because everything keeps costing more and they aren't getting cost of living adjustments with Social Security, and many lost their pensions to Wall Streeters. it is what it is gary
Nice find. Gary, as far as you know, they have been there for years. When I got my "find", they had been there for at least 3 years with no one knowing about them. http://www.cointalk.com/showthread.php?t=10176&p=828271&highlight=#post828271
Congrats on a nice find. I have never heard of a $20 roll of half dollars. I have only seen $10 rolls of half dollars.
promoting roll searching spurs this hobby in a positive way. Then there will become more buyers for the sellers. I don't know why the op was criticized. I have always seen the CT members trying to encourage people toward our hobby.
