firstly darren you have the basis of a good collection, i like to concentrate on UK, french and german states coins, and scottish banknotes. bu i still collect general world coins and notes, how do you store your collection? WH smiths sell a decent style coins album and then there is the lindner system which i use myself. you will find that by specialising in certain areas as well as the general world, you will soon develop a greater understanding of the hobby when you start to look for different die patterns, and one golden rule i have always had is to never clean your coins, a little dip in acetone followed by a rinse in distilled water is ok to remove general dirt, but never put them in any other liquid. some people have used vinegar to remove dirt but it also attacks the natural patina of your coins. if you are ever stuck never be afraid to ask anyone on this forum for help and i am certain you will get help and advice with your collection.
I found that I am mostly focusing on old british coins such as farthings, florins, shillings etc. I keep my coins in various different containers, some even envilopes. I need to get an album but I cannot get one for a decient price. I never clean my coins I like keeping them as they are. I find that old looking coins gives it a better look in my view. However if any of my coins are cleaned it will be from the guy or girl who sold me them.
the smiths albums are about £15 and are really functional. collecting old british coins is brilliant and in time you might be able to find some reasonable scots coins from before 1708. the islands as well are a great source of coins such as the channel islands and the isle of man. i am like you though UK coins take most of my cash and i am always looking for better examples to add to my vast collection of over 6000
Ye I will hopfully get one soon. I have been looking for a coin with good age of 100 years but I cant seem to find any.
a good source of older coins are flea markets and car boot sales, i have found some unbelievable stuff over the years from them.
