    Hello,
I like to collect wheat pennies and I was wondering if any of you knew a place that you can get a good amount of wheat pennies that are really unsearched.

thats gonna be hard...I wouldn't believe it when listings state that it is unsearched. Most sellers will search them anyway and just put unsearched on there to draw in buyers. This is especially true on places like ebay. However, your best bet as far as ebay goes would probably be this one guy that sells wheat pennies by the pound and also throws in some silver coins and an indian head. According to him, and judging by the pic on the listing the guys has millions of wheats. I don't know how he could actually search them with that many, but you never know. Also if you look at his feedback its all good and many people have said they found rare and valuable wheats, so you never know. A few people even stated they received a 1909-S VDB

But I would day that is probably your best bet....but don't expect to find something great

Since wheat pennies really started the con collecting craz in the 50's, I would be very hard pressed to think of any source where it truly is unsearched. I had great luck in the 80's and 90's buying bags from coin shops. Back then all wheat cents that came in except 6 dates went into bags unless very high grade. I have had kids dig through my bags of wheats and find almost all dates in there, including things like teen s mints, (10s, 12s, etc), 1909 vdb, etc. If you could find a bag from an old coin shop that is where I would venture you might have the best luck.

    Good luck.

There are 5k bags that come up all the time, that while they have been searched for keys, they typically haven't been searched for varieties. Be patient and look for casual listings, seller who don't normally sell coins. Antiques shops are my favorite, be prepared to go to about $250 - others know what I know. I bought quite a few as part of an investigative/learning thing to figure out what I had.

I could dip into a huge hoard I have had for a long time for you. While I am sure that my dad and his dad pulled the keys and steel - I have spotted semi- keys.. they are unsearched for varieties. roughly 80% 40 & 50's - 20% 09 to 39

I can't guarantee that you won't find the svdb, 14d, 31s - however just due to the odds based on mintage figures you would need a 100,000 wheats before one would turn up in an unsearched lot anyhow.

Best of luck.. Buy a bag - separate by date & m/m - print out all the top 100 lists and have a go at it. It's a great training exercise if for nothing else!

That would be a real interesting read, let us know if you do it!

As for "unsearched Wheats" good luck my friend. Most all the listings on EBAY have been searched and searched a few more times for keys and semi keys. It is possable to find varities though, most people cant be bothered with those as eyeeatwheaties said. I lucked out ONCE from cragslist and found a 1909, 1909 vdb, and a couple other key dates. They were truly unsearched. Anything I've bought from ebay has been really bad. No to say they aren't there but finding them isn't easy. Most are scams. One thing I do is ask older friends and family members, I found a few that way too. Maybe someone else can shead a little more light for you.

    Good Luck!

That is a really good question. Most of my Wheaties came from 5,000 piece bags. I paid about $300.00 a bag. Also, like some of the others, only the real hard to read dates were from the teens, twenties, and thirtys. Most were from the late 40's and 50's. (my last bags yieded approx: 5 teens/most 1916; 3 twenties; 50 thirties; and maybe 1500 fortys). I purchased them from Lynn Coins and Collectibles of TN.

I like the Wheaties of any date. I am back to not having running water again - pipes froze a couple days ago. Onec the distraction of being waterless passes, I hope to pull out a bag of wheaties to sort. It is one of my very favorite winter activities. I have a couple bags to sort still - and my eyes aren't getting any better. I misplaced my glasses again today - good thing I listened to my dad and took typing in highschool. I use a magnifer for looking at my coins anymore - the glasses are not enough. Off topic a bit, ....if you get any leads on wheat, do share. Thanks.
