This is the coin I was waiting on. It has some problems with severe sctatches, but if not for that, it would be WAY out of my budget. It may have the most detail of any of my draped busts, even my prized 1802 S-231 which is my avatar. Without the scratches it might make VF30. I got it for G4 money. One thing I don't understand is why it suddenly looks like black and white photos when the coin has a lot of rich brown color and even some red, perhaps from an old cleaning.
Looks like someone took a black & white (i.e. greyscale) scan of the coin. When I see a coin like that I wonder how/why the coin was damaged the way that it was. Maybe a shovel hit it? Maybe someone was concerned if it was real and wanted to see if it was copper all the way through. Who knows, but it's neat to wonder. 30 details all day. Could you imagine how much it would be worth if choice! Neat coin. Great date! I hope you like it when it arrives.
It appears that I accidentally switched my camera setting to black and white. Here is the color photo: Now looking on the obverse in the upper part of the hair, I see this. I cannot identify it, but it appears to be raised on the coin and not engraved. Has anybody got a clue why it would be there? It looks like a 7 with a ball on the bottom to the far left and repeated at the middle, perhaps slightly larger. then the small i, the large L some space and then a Large D.
Man that's strange Marshall. I wish the blow-up was clearer so I could check it out better. The details on the coin are really nice, but the damage is unfortunate. I do see the i, L (real clear) and can vaguely make out the D (?). Are you sure it's not a counterstamp of some kind. Anyway, I love the coin. Nice pick-up Bruce
Yes - I can see the L in the hair and in the blow up. Almost looks like something IL can't what the first letter is. Nice pickup Marshall.
In the blow-up I can see the "L" clearly, but I'm not sure about the rest. I'm glad I don't own this coin, it would drive me crazy trying to figure it out. I still like it though Marshall. Bruce
