The two bills were turned in because the lady "didn't trust" them (the bills) Out of 1000 halves, I only found these two....
thought it strange there was a 'proof' coin... I always wonder HOW a coin got into circ.. I thought I'd find a few more coins out of $500 worth... I'll do the other $500 tomorrow
Although finds like this are worth very little over face (except the silver!), I always find them exciting and tend to hold on to them just for the "neato!" factor of running across them.
I don't feel so bad about taking a break from half roll searching. Only one silver coin in a box? That sucks. I used to do about $3000 at one time and I would get about 50 or so out of 6000 coins. The more I searched the leaner my findings got.
all boxes finished and yes - it was a proof coin... so here it is.... 4000 coins 1 1964 1 1967 1 1983 proof really kinda depressed, I think was it going on is these coins are probably being recirculated maybe regionally, and fewer and fewer "finds" are the result. a man at the local coin shop said to search the BAGS from 'turned in' change... you'll obvisiously will get the seached over stuff but ALSO the coinage granny found in her closet shoe box... (gotta have that relationship with the vault person of course)
If we are talking halves I searched $250 dollars worth yesterday and found 5 40% and a 90%. Not bad for a days work.
I have gotten the word from my tellers that I am not the only one buying up halves... Things have dried up here too.
exactly, let's say I 'dump' 3000 halves at my local credit union... I don't imagine they magically get shipped across the country, I'm sure they go somewhere close, rewrapped, and sent back to storage
Me to Ratio411. I get so excited when I find something neat in change that I add it to my collection and every so often look at whatever it is and reminisce!
pardon my ignorance.....but what good is a proof found in circulation? it would have wear and/or marks and not "proof" anymore
