My wife's sister logged in to check her ebay account using our computer while visiting from Chicago. We are 8 hours away. 6 months later, she was selling some silver spoons. My wife collects spoons. I bid on a spoon, and was kicked off ebay for a while as a shill bidder. Their shill detector bots are powerful. They thought I was a shill because the seller had once logged in from my computer. I was ticked. I wanted that spoon. I contacted ebay, but they didn't give me a break.
CaptainKirk... I believe most saavy sellers know that and/or have partners and multiple accounts and know not to mix them.
Looking forward to seeing these Eye.... good thread too btw.... this is a key aspect of learning the coin collecting hobby in this age of internet buying.... where the game is won on the buy as they say. As for initial bids, never ever go high, or more often than not you'll buy high.
I am still breathing deep. taking a deep breathe.. exhale... yeah.... soooo.. On a better note, I went to a show this weekend down at DC. It was the polar opposite of of the other shows I have been to. I learned a lot, got a couple of nice coins and my first cherry pick! a VDB DDO FS-1101! woooooot! I think I'l do the right thing and say something nice before I start ranting again. here is a tease.. this comes via Angel Dee's...
Unfortunetley this is done all the time on e-bay someone has a friend or another computer Using a different IP address and there you go shill bidding!
I keep hearing that there is so much shill bidding on eBay that no one should be able to win anything there. I do at least my share on eBay and I have never heard any direct evidence of any shill bidding. I have heard of bait and switch, counterfeits, non-delivery, but never shill bidding.
I use to sell on e-bay and yes it happens more frequent then you know, especially when the Seller uses the "private Listing feature" there is complete anonymity you have no idea who Your bidding against if this is something hard to find or rare and the seller wants to get top Dollar he will simply use another computer different IP address and a stealth e-bay account He will run the price up until he get,s to a figure he,s comfortable with he either win,s big Or loses nothing, if you dont believe me just google search stealth e-bay accounts i,am Sure you will find enough information there to get my point.
I still sell on eBay and because you say it happens does not make it so. I am not stupid. I could not possibly believe that it never happens. But still I have only seen the occasional evidence that anything at all like that is going on. I have done the Google thing and all I found was upset sellers/buyers who thought things happened. No proof. It would not surprise me that people are using my bidding as an example of people who are shill bidding.
Well, I played a bit bumping my bids just a little at a time. I'll have to wait to see if the winner leaves feedback. I suspect that there won't be any. I also added the exact title to my search list - to see if it gets relisted. I'll do more of that to see if I can catch someone.
You are not the only one - I also used to place low bids on a coin to see what happens and watch it. Then sometimes I may or may not bid again. For the last couple of years I have used the figure out what to pay and just put in a bid, then forget about it. I do the same thing on heritage. Once I figure out what I willing to bid - I place the bid and forget it. Actually - got me in trouble one time where I won and did not catch the invoice. Heritage support was very nice to me.
I agree shill bidding happens and it's not right, but it seems like a waste of time to try and police people and their ebay auctions. I'd rather just snipe, and use my free time to look for more coins.
Have not bought from Angel Dee's, but they do have some nice coins. I wish at times they posted pictures on the web. Oh well. And yes - even on heritage you can get some over graded coins. There have even been a couple coins that I was surprised had green beanies on them, but I thought the coin had an issue for the grade. No knocking the grade or cac - but boy I would not want to get that coin sight unseen. I guess more a personal choice.
Knowing how e-bay works makes it easy to manipulate the system weather or Not you believe that is up to you! here,s a link http://www.articlesbase.com/education-articles/ebay-stealth-guide-4-1859479.html
I really enjoyed meeting him. He direct and concise when reviewing coins and his offerings are stellar, although he is full of himself when it comes to posting pics. on the other hand. He is a mom & pop operation and he doesn't have to notch things up. I'll be sending him pics of my recent purchases, he knows the coins I bought so hopefully it will perk his interest to at least get his high end stuff imaged. I'll tell ya what .. TT is just as bad I got this email tonight.
yes there is shill bidding, before they hid bidders i was getting the creeper bids on something I wanted, I e-mailed the bidder and the seller. both replies came from the same e-mail account. it was quite funny as he tried to act like two people!
