I'll have to get the silver issue as my coin budget is depleted and I'll have to push this one thru the boss!! I'd like to get at least one gold one as well, seems like a no-brainer to me!! WTG Green!! :thumb:

They usually make the multi-coin sets available at a later date.

Being but one of the 30-million who served since 1775, I'm absolutely thrilled with the imagery shown on the $5 gold obverse. Having been a Grunt, I thoroughly identify with the magnificent Riflemen [through the age] as depicted. We laughingly called ourselves One One Bullets. The Army MOS [military occupational specialty] for a rifleman is 11B.

Grunts have tough-gutted pride. We comprise only 12% of the Army, yet account for 87% of the casualty rate. We believe that if you don't got boots-on-the-ground, you don't got nothing. Good men willingly suffer to gain that ground.

In my Grunt oriented mind, this is one highly desirable Challenge Coin ~ although rather pricey. It is no more than a coin and mine will be obtained for what it represents, and not for its bullion value. Couldn't care less about that.

It represents: One Flag, One Language and One Nation Under God. We paid for that with generations of American blood.

Just love that Big Red One patch. After all, if you are going to be one, be a Big Red One. You guys took so many casualties in Nam that the medevac chopper pilots dubbed your unit the Big Dead One. Only thing better are Paratroopers and Rangers. Half way around the world, Paratroopers are jumping-in and Rangers are roping-in while the remainder of the Army is still lacing their boots. Sorry 'bout that!

I purchased the Proof dollar and half today - my first actual coin purchases since I've started working on an inherited collection. As a young, active duty 35W, and aspiring numismatist it was a no-brainer (despite the slightly unappealing price tag).

Big thanks to all the former service members on here and around the world for paving the way. I can only aspire to wear such prestigious patches some day!

Actually the proof coin is not that much over spot. I got $95+/- over the current spot price (going by $1337). The coin is 90% gold and over a 1/4oz. It says in the brouchue I received it is 8.359 grams. 28.3495231 grams in an ounce and that means it is about .28 oz. This coin is a good buy IMHO.
That being said I apologize to the people who do not want to discuss bullion value and only the coin as a collectible. If I can dig up the money, I'm buying (as a collectible)... I also like the silver proof coin too. Thanks to all that have served.

Actually, you have to multiply the 8.359 grams by 90%, to get 7.5231 grams, then divide that number by 31.1 to get the weight in TROY ounces, which would be .2419 ounce.

Received my confirmation email from the mint concerning my purchases and notice there is a delay in shipment until 28 FEB 2011.

Oh, I forgot it's troy ounces. Thanks for correcting me. Still not that bad considering how much over spot I paid for a 2009 proof buffalo.

It can be confusing sometimes, since the ounce used in daily living isn't the same ounce they use for precious metals

Me too, but I'll bet the coin(s) will get us before that date.

Yeah, I just googled "how many grams are in an ounce?." It's cool that PM's use troy ounces though (more weight).

And to make matters more confusing, a troy pound is only 12 troy ounces, or 373.24 grams, so it is significantly lighter than an avoirdupois pound.

But if you take 16 of those troyes ounces and compare them to avoirdupois we are significantly heavier......:)

I guess that gives us bragging rights, then--

"Our 16 troy ounces are heavier than your 16 avoirdupois ounces! So there!" :D
