Hi, I'm a newbie that's been collecting the state quarters since they came out. I have a real basic question that I haven't been able to find an answer for: What's the best way to get coins in those cardboard folders and displays - like the ones from Harris/Whitman? What I've been doing is sure to make you cringe. On the holes that are too tight to press the coins in with my thumb, with the coin placed directly over the hole, I use a notepad for cushion and I hammer it in place - with a HAMMER! I'm sure this is sacrilege for all you purists, but I haven't been able to figure out any other way to get them securely in there. Suggestions?
Howdy StatesOnly - Welcome to the Forum !! You can try this - place your album page on top of a folded bath towel. Then push the coins in - it'll be easier. But try to only push on the edges of the coin
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I reacted to that exactly as if you were threatening my....um....self with a hammer. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there.
lol!! as to the OP, the best advice I've heard is to take a pen (one that is out of ink) and runit around the inside of the hole while pushing outward with it to slightly increase the diamete of the hole. This sometimes works and it sometimes doesn't. Another option is to upgrade to a higher quality album. This will cost a little money, but the holes tend to be much better cut and they allow you to see both sides of the coin.
I also use inexpensive folders for organizing inexpensive coins [i.e., items out of pocket change], higher quality albums for mid-value coins, and airtites for high value coins. The process of using an inexpensive cardboard folder goes a lot smoother if you work on thick carpeting or use the towel trick, which actually works. I've considered buying higher quality albums, but these are not high value coins; and I figure that anything not worth doing is not worth doing well.
