How can you tell the difference between the 1976 Kennedy Half S 40% BU and S 40% PROOF?? Is this more difficult than I am making it? Thanks in advance...
If you are looking for the difference between proof and businees strikes, Chris gave you the answer. If you're trying to decide whether you have a copper-nickel coin or 40% silver clad coin, a scale is the answer. The silver one will be a whopping .16 grams heavier. You can also see a difference in the clad inner layer. The silver clad coin won't be the orange copper color you are accustomed to seeing on circulating coins.
The reason I asked is because I got a 40% from a local coin shop that claimed it to be a BU and I paid BU pricing for it. I got a 40% PROOF from ebay and paid PROOF price for it and they look the same... Let me know if the attached picture is not good enough to tell.
