I have a steal 1943-S cent that appears to have a weakly struck 4 in the 1943. The 4 is barely visible. Is this coin worth anything more than a normal 1943-S? or does this error decrease value? Also, is this error common? Thanks.
I dont know much else to say. I have never heard of such a happening on the steal cents, but that error has been frequented on other coins of that time.
'43 was in many respects a typical year at the mint - lots of planchets went through the presses, grease got on some of them, coins were bagged and shipped, etc., etc., etc.
I agree with Roy, it sounds like a grease filled die. That makes it an interesting, but not particularly valuable error.
