I'm beginning my first type folder (other than my U.S. type set) and I've decided on Flying Eagle/Indian Head cents. What I can't decide on is the best way to do it, so I'm looking for opinions. For example, I like nice chocolate brown ones with good eye appeal. Should I limit myself to grades like XF or higher or just fill in with what I can get and upgrade when I find a better one at a nice price? What has been your experience with this or other sets you've done? Of course it's all about enjoyment and I'm looking for ways you all have enjoyed doing it.
Well on the flying eagle cent, trying to locate a problem free coin without pitting with original surfaces will enough.
You will spend less money completing your set if you take your time and buy quality coins in your target grade range instead of buying low grade examples and upgrading.
Take a look at the pricing for the 1877, first, before you decide on a target grade.........and then the 1909-S......and we mustn't overlook the variety, 1888 8/7, either. Chris
Yes, I would recommend picking a grade and sticking to it. Also be prepared to spend big $$$$ on your keys, remember to be very patient. Research what you should pay for a certain year, and stick to it. Don't get caught up in the moment and overspend on something that you can get at a better price by waiting a little longer for a better deal to come up. And while we're on the subject, why is 1877 more valuable than 1909-S? The mintages on 1909-S are less than half the 1877. Was it because people saved/preserved 1909-S because it was the last of the series; while the 1877 were heavily circulated? -LTB
