    Hey guys,

Soon, I will throw down my 5,000th post. That's right... you guys have put up with a lot of baloney from me, and you deserve a treat. So how about another game of "Attribute THIS, pal !!!"

I'll submit one of my favorite types - the Capped Bust half. Attribution and grade opinions welcome.

Nice piece, as for the Overton, when I have a day or so I'll try again.

1827 is a tough year, with 49 die marriages.

I think that we have a winner!

The line 3 of stripe 3 to second crossbar clinches it.

What an exquisite half dollar! It makes my EF 1827 O half want to hide in shame.

    Right on !

One of the clinchers is as Frank Treashunt said - third line of third gule up one bar. In addition, there are two other diagnostics which seal the deal :

    • a vertical die line on lowest olive leaf (@6:30) up to the olive branch above it, and
    • another vertical die line on the uppermost talon up towards the feathers
Both are clear on the coin but hard to see on the pic.

Old small-slab ANACS called this one MS62; it's certainly strong "market acceptable" at that grade.

And since it clearly looks better than a 62 that pretty much clinches it for me that it's really an AU64 ;)

A MS62 my foot! That half dollar is at least a MS64. I just don't know or understand ANCS's grading sometimes. I feel that they tend under-grade, but that is just my opinion. I just can't get over MS62. I almost dropped my jaw when I read that!

    I agree with O-104.
:thumb:Frank and others can pick out Bust half Overton # better than I

Yes it is a very nice coin, and it looks to be an MS64 in most all respects - except one, it has light wear. Now it looks too nice to grade it AU58, but that nagging light wear is there so they couldn't call it MS64 - so they split the difference and called it a 62.
