I picked one of those up about a month ago in a junk silver box (it was EF40 or so). I'm always happy to pay melt for a 150 year old coin!

Beautiful coins Collector1966, especially the 1913 Hamburg 20 marks.
Nice coins, as usual, Siberian Man. I especially like your 1669 Billon Solidus and the 1766 1/12 Thaler, great coins.... I like the 1669 Solidus the most of all the ones you posted though... something about it speaks to me.... very cool coin.

GeorgeM: Sounds like a good pickup, an 1861 thaler for melt.... not too shabby.

Thanks. I picked up the Hamburg 20 Marks from a dealer who had just acquired 3 or 4 of them, and I got the "pick of the litter". It could very well be the highest grade made-for-circulation coin in my collection. :)

That is one of the things that attracted me to that particular coin-- its connection to the Napoleonic wars that had been fought a century before, and its issuance a year before yet another war with France began.

Hopefully, they won't be fighting any more wars :)

Umm, the last one ended sixty-five years ago. The Federal Republic of Germany, founded in 1949, has not fought any, and both France and Germany are part of the European Union. This close political and economic interdependence in the EU does not necessarily prevent wars, but it sure makes them much less likely. (Hope the Americans don't fight any more civil wars. ;) )

And Prussia ceased to exist in 1947 anyway. That country occupied and absorbed quite a few smaller countries after 1815, and it also managed to keep Austria out of the 1871 empire. The result was this German Empire had one dominating force, and one that was certainly not loved by all in that empire ...

Back to that coin - you will have noticed that the eagle differs from the usual one. On these two (2M and 3M) he grabs and holds a snake. And of course that is not taken from the Mexican CoA, but the snake represents the enemy. Mintage was 1.5 million (2M) and 2 million (3M). Apparently quite a few proof pieces were issued, since even in proof they are not terribly expensive.

I hope we Americans don't fight any more civil wars, either. Unfortunately, we seem to have more than our share of rabble-rousers these days.

moneyer12 i just love UK coins.......

the coins of the german states are a really interesting subject i have enjoyed clinkers threads on coin talk because one of my own main areas for collecting is coins of the german states particularly hannover because of the link with UK coins up to victoria. my favourite pieces have always been the talers because they are so ornate and well struck.
