I'm sure everyone's got a coin they just haven't been able to find searching. Sure you could buy it but that would take the fun out of it. For me it's the 1970-d half. I know they weren't released and it also doesn't help that it's silver but I have read about people finding them. Tell me about the one you can't find.
I just buy the coin because I want as high a grade as my budget can afford. Not to say there is not some pulled coins from searches in my I.S. books, but eventually they get upgraded with a purchased coin.
I can't find one or two of the 1982 cent varieties. A couple years of off and on looking for them...nothing.
Yep - I just buy the one I want for my older wheaties. THen again I buy low grade for the whitman albums Even though there is one or two moderns that I need from pocket change - just have to be patient.
1992, either mint, CAM. 1943-D war nickel still eludes me, dammit... you'd think looking at over $4k in nickels (I've found nearly 2 rolls of war nicks so far) I'd have found one, but nope... ugh.
I've been trying to fill a book of Lincoln pennies from pocket change only. Only been doing it for a few months. The book only deals with 1959 forward. I was really surprised to find a 1971 S penny. And I don't see how I'm ever going to get the other "s" series, especially the 82s seeing there were only 3.8 million ever minted. But, I've really switched my hopes. There were a few 1965 silver Roosevelt dimes minted. Now that is a coin worth searching the pocket change for.
1954 wheat cent... Only wheat I'm missing from 1935-1958 in my collection. Looked through a couple thousand my dad had collected since the 60's, looked at coin shows, but it still eludes me.
Okay. I'm not a serious cent collector, so I just assumed that everything listed in the book were circulated coins. But I guess from 1975 on all the "S" pennies were proof only. But, the book has a hole for the 82s.
I finally bought most of the ones I need, but one I'm still holding out on and can't get is one of the 2004 Jefferson nickels, the "peace" variety. There's nothing rare about it but I never get one.
1950-D Jefferson, and a 2009-P dime, and of all the stupid coins... a 1968-D quarter! That stupid quarter, I hate it.
stroligep, well some books have circulation and proofs. but just having an 82s and no other proofs is very odd. maybey because that was the year they had different compositions. I really dont know. Hey ya never know you might find it in circulation. I found a 91s proof in a roll.
70-D half is still on my list of ones to find. I think the one the vexes me the most is the 1970 S small date is killin me.
I find all kinds of stuff from time to time from silver dimes to discovery coin 1988D LMC with die trails But do you think I could find a 1988 RDV-006 or ANY wide "AM" cent, Nooooooooooo It is getting to the point of being funny :too-funny: Terry
I search halves a lot, and have actually found 3 1970 D. However, I have a collection of Proof Kennedy halves found from circulation and am only missing 1995 S, 1999 S, and 2010 S. I know, this is a unique collection and the proofs are impaired, but it has been fun for me....
I have yet to find ANY proof coin in circulation and boy howdy, let me tell you that I have seen a lot of circulation coins in the past 30 years! I have been searching trying to put together a set of Jeffersons and haven't found the keys at all. 38-D, 38-S, 39-D, 39-S, 50-D. I also have yet to see a 2009-D, but I will probably find that before any of the others. I love the guy who's putting together a set of Washington quarters from change. I am as well, but I am only keeping high-end AU or better examples. IMHO this last recession was bad for coin buyers and great for circulation searchers. Lots of old coins being cashed in, some collections being spent and a lack of new coins due to the flood of the old back into the marketplace. Circulation searching was what gave this hobby its greatest boost. The advent of clad coinage has cooled this pursuit, but I think it is finally starting to come back. That is good for the hobby!
In one of those little ironies in life, a few months ago I was trying to get the 1938 S and kept getting outbid on eBay. I went to my local coin store and bought something else and ended up getting the 38 S in my change. I thought it was funny that of all the places that you'd think would put that aside, I got it there.
