Hello, so frustrated searching thought maybe I might have some luck here, the coin in very thin and I believe it to be copper on the side with the cross there is what what I believe to be a t and a B split by the coat of arms, can't make out all the letters, I thought maybe an oaktree but can't find another one like it
It could be a K B, which could indicate Hungary.... but that is just a wild guess. It looks kinda like an eagle, wings spread on the other side.... but very hard to tell. I bet someone around here will be able to help you out... at least tell you the country of origin I would hope.
beautiful, I thought you said these were the geniuses of the numismatic world??? 70+ views by professionals and nothing?? Its so easy. Vlad Tepes, Vlad the impaler....duh.... After nearly a year of searching that is... what a pain in the. Now my question, what's the blood sucker worth?
Hungary it is. Wladislaw I(1440-1444) Denar. http://www.mcsearch.info/record.html?id=2682 http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/ecin/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=11654
Let's keep this on the professional level. Leave the friend requests for Facebook. Even if this is a cointalk site, there are probably better places to discuss that role of quarters in my pocket. And DCH....does your post mean I'm right, or are you letting me know you are? Either way, the search is over.
obviously dch is telling you that your'e right, why else would he post the link? just a question, why are you being so antagonistic in your posting style?
ummmm....antagonistic? I .... hadn't even considered anything I posted could be taken as antagonistic. My first post was an attempt at humor. Unfortunately I didn't go into enough detail and explain that I had my eyes glued to the computer for four hours upon returning home, in search of some coin that resembled the one Airicamsamerica posted. I found it interesting with so many coin enthusiasts posting on this site that after some 70 views, only one person commented. But I guess I don't get to celebrate my finding it before an expert posted exactly what it was we were looking at. See, Moneyor12 I'm not obsessed with coins, I think its a cool hobby, but I'm not one who lives and dies by the planchet. However, Airicamsamerica is a serious coiner, (I know, I know but its like being a "gamer" or a "waiter", a coiner....no, yes??)anyway yeah so that chicks into coins, and being her husband and all, I just tried to the good husband thing and help her out. Guess I just got lucky. As for DCH, is he telling me I'm right??? Seriously, I'm confused, because the dates he cited aren't those I see when I pull up Mr. VLAD., in fact I don't even see the coin she has on any sites for Hungary or the Impaler at least not the back side...is that the obverse or reverse moneyor12? the one with the tree or eagle or shaman or skeleton on it... so I guess the search isn't entirely over, sorry DCH, apparently I didn't pick up on you obviously saying I was right, didn't mean and disrespect, just didn't know. And as for that whole role of quarters post, Moneyor12 relax theoldman and Airicamsamerica are married, with three kids. If i didn't know better, I'd swear you were showing some antagonistic qualities of your own there I almost afraid to ask you if Modern Era Coins are the ones from the 2000's, it might insult you...and all I wanted to do was get some info, maybe put away some 2008 pennies and some 2010 nickels for you for christmas. Keep smiling MONEY, lifes too short.
I think what he is saying that it is a coin of a different 'vlad'.... there were several, he says Wladislaw I (1440-1444) in his post. Vlad the Impaler was Vlad III. Not my area of expertise, but I would think that the side with what looks like an eagle would be the obverse.
Thank you. Now the Post by DCH while confusing to me was supportive and helpful. And here again I am the recipient of some more very useful and very honest information which I appreciate. I was intimidated just to even post anything, not knowing a double dye from a double decker but I did it. I tried to keep the mood light, and I got excited like in blues clues after steve finds all three paw prints.... I make a joke with my wife and next thing I know I'm being labelled. Moneyfor12's I'm sorry, sorry for my excitment, for interacting in such a clad manner, but dog gone it I bet you were the same way with your first coin identification. I'll focus on controlling my excitment, and work to become a cooler Numismatist. Thanks again rexesq, Wlad, Vlad....makes sense. Yeah its looking more like an eagle to me to know, wish I'd have seen it sooner, could have eliminated all the "willow tree coin", "palm tree three pence" and "Pine Tree Ancient coin" google searches that stole hours from my life. In all seriousness, thanks again. Have a great day.
we aren't too sarcastic, are we. Perhaps those 70 viewers could not id it. but they looked and tried.
No problem, looks like an interesting coin. The thing about typing is, it's hard to tell when someone is saying something in a joking manner or being completely serious, so it is easy for things to be taken in a different way than originally intended. Using those smiley and winky faces seem to help I have noticed Welcome to Cointalk! To you and your wife, Airicamsamerica. I think you will find that there are some very smart people here, who are also very helpful and kind when it comes to coin identification, and just general information and knowledge.
You are proof to that. Thanks for the welcome. And you are right about the writing, I get in trouble with the boss all the time for the same stuff. I am confident there are all kinds of intellect floating around Coin Talk, just watching my wife in researching and identifying things I see its more enjoyable if you know what you are talking about and what you believe it is you are looking at. Otherwise its just a bunch of change in your pocket..... The only concern I have is if someday I'll become the one who points out that the 70 people may not have been able to ID a coin, but that they looked and tried. The exact point that new kid on the block was making. I don't want to end up being someone who verifies to the COIN TALK NATION that the young pup just looked a little longer and tried a little harder than the seasoned coin community before him! But if I do, just type the word Treashunt and with any luck, I'll wake from my coin master comma and remember this day....snap back to life, Like Rocky after Mickey died. "GO FOR IT Treashunt..." Have a great day, I'm gonna go practice pointing out the obvious see if that helps me blend in around all the MS 70 personalities that keep popping up. By tonight you won't even recognize me as I transform from "theoldman" to "Merkuredime" or "DACOPERKID" and attack anyone who dares celebrate the excitement of coin
Thank you, theoldman for gracing our presence with your superiour intellect! I feel humbled in light of your recent brilliant discovery and explanation of your wife's medieval coin. I apologize for the entire Coin Talk family for not answering your wife's request in a timely fashion for I was not aware that she required instant gratification. The fact that "70" looks did not provide an immediate answer (regardless of the fact that a number of those "looks" were actually bots gathering data and could not answer the query...but you probably knew that anyway) could be explained (inadequately) by the simple reason that the majority of the more knowledgeable medieval coin collectors were either at work or asleep since Europe is in a far different time zone than we are on this side of the ocean (Atlantic). Also, I rolled on the floor with almost uncontrollable, side splitting laughter at your provocative ribald humor "there are probably better places to discuss that role of quarters in my pocket." I know you meant to say "roll of dimes" but I'll let that go.... a novice can sometime mistake quarters for dimes. Again, thank you for your profound wisdom and insight at our inadequacies. We will strive to be more attentive and will pounce as quick as foxes on the next identification request. You may now return to the Roller Derby Championships which we inconsiderately tore you away from. Oh.... and Welcome to Coin Talk!
Actually, I only started becoming interested in coins over the past two years as I watched my wife find certain error coins and then explain to me what it was or what it was pressed over.... Of course then I glanced at the heritage auction prices realized and said..wow this is really interesting now. But I just try and organize my wifes penny collection and her nickels and dimes, or try and determine what some roman coin might be. I did have a lot of the statehood quarters, but I lost those in a battle with a few packs of stubborn cigarettes. Nope I'm no avid collector, but I'm hooked on this site now that I've found so many humble and easy going individuals to share laughs with.
Definitely not Vlad the Impaler. Depending on which 'expert' you believe, there were only 0-3 coin types issued by Vlad, none of which look like this. This coin is issued by Wladislaw I of Hungary, aka Władysław III of Poland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Władysław_III_of_Poland The links in my earlier post should give an idea of the value. Probably $10-15.
In all truth, this thread is quite an enjoyable read. Welcome to CT, and I'll have a cold one to that.
