I'm looking to reduce a few of the duplicate $100's in my collection. Can anyone see a reason to hold on to these? Besides the 74 the others look to be CU condition but from fairly high print runs. Trying to decide if it's worth the time & fees to try to ebay them. Thanks. Edit: Noticed the series doesn't show too well in the pic, the 2nd is an 88, and the last 2 are 93.
I would choose the highest grade note out of those 4, keep it, and then spend the rest. Personally, I think having $400 tied up in these notes is a lot, and I knew in a second I would spend that very first one at the top. And $300 could go a long way as an investment in some new notes for your collection, which MAY appreciate in value over the years more than these $100's would. Ebay is an option, but I think the seller fees will kill you, I mean you have to remember that paypal + ebay take about 10-12% for themselves, so you'd need to sell each of these for around $111-$113 just to break even and keep $100 for yourself after shipping costs.
I agree. Keep one and dispose of the others. Maybe swap them with another note collector for something else.
Yeah, originally wasn't even considering that route but after looking at the completed listings they MAY do a little better than break even after fees. Thanks for all the feedback everyone.
I think you might of lost money just holding them. Sell or trade them or even give the tellers a day where they thought they had a counterfeit bill. especially with the counterfeit detector pen. Dean 295
To a degree, true. Considering these were picked up for face the only losing part here would be the time value of money or a missed investment opportunity. Interest rates are at historic lows, so not much lost there. Most collections in fact are probably a losing proposition from a purely investment viewpoint considering alternatives....but this is a hobby and not an investment....at least not one focused on maximizing returns. I may try to sell....if it's worth my time.
I wish I had converted most of my old notes to gold a few years ago. I would be way ahead. Only ones I will keep now are ones that have that "will pay to the bearer on demand" on it.
"way ahead" in what sense? Unless you conduct all of your day to day transactions in precious metals now I don't see how you would have been anymore ahead than you are now by converting all your currency into precious metals. You still need to rely on methods of payment conducted in dollars. Are you suggesting you've found a way to get by in life not using paper and coin fiat currency? It must be pretty costly for you to seek out and spend only those notes which say "will pay to the bearer on demand". It doesn't matter if notes say "will pay to the bearer on demand", they are still worth face value unless the Series and/or condition of the notes carries a numismatic premium that the collector/dealer market values them at and is willing to pay you for them. No one but collectors/dealers are going to take them for more than face value. This is a 'paper money' thread regarding collectible notes and inquiries therein, not a 'bullion investing' thread nor one discussing the values of fiat currencies. Please lets keep it this way.
