Anyone own one of these Brasero Efigie onzas or know any of the history besides what is listed below? Anyone own any of the coins from the Azteca series at all? I've seen the Brasero Efigie go on auction on ebay for some good money, know anything about this Pre-Columbian Azteca Series?? Stock photo until I get mine delivered. :thumb:

Mexico produced this bullion coin as part of their Pre-Columbian Azteca series. This 5 Peso (1 Onza) - 1 Troy Ounce coin shows a carved effigy (Brasero Efigie) on the reverse, with the national arms on the obverse.
With a mintage of ONLY 2,000 this is a hard to find coin! Listed in Krause as KM#648.

The coins in this series have wonderfully attractive designs! I particularly like the Guerrero Aguila (obverse design) silver coin.

I've been considering to pick up some of the silver versions for some time, just haven't gotten around to that yet.

Series information is available here --> on the Casa de Moneda de Mexico web site.

High silver prices are bringing out some interesting pieces. I'll keep my eyes peeled for those.

Yup, I ordered mine from Apmex. I hear they're really good, so I'll find out. The shipping price was a bit overboard :eek:but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. :thumb:

    Beware of using WC mintages

Be careful using World Coins mintages for these coins. Bank of Mexico has mintages posted here: http://www.banxico.org.mx/billetesymonedas/infogeneral/fabricacion/plata.html

Proof mintage of Brasero Efigie as of 2009 is 5,800 coins and the BU coins have a mintage of 3,580.

I think the discrepancy is due to the Mint still minting these coins...

That being said, they sure a pretty. Surprise the mintage numbers aren't even higher.

Yes I have this coin as well as many other from the Pre-Columbian series. I have all of the Azteca series coins as well as the others such as the Toltec, Mayan, Olmec, etc. The ones I have are all the Unc versions, no gold or proof versions, but it took me a while to get them all. I only obtained the last 2 coins during the ANA show in Los Angeles back in 2009. Unfortuantely the coin dealer I bought most of my pieces from is no longer doing business do to ill health. I would need to check my database to see who I bought the last 2 coins from. Let me know if you want the info and I'd be happy to post it. I'm not sure if they have more of these coins or not.

    Mexican Bullion

Mexico has had some beautiful designs for their bullion coins. It also seems alot of the Mexican Bullion coins, especially some of the more modern fractions of the Onza denominations, such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 Onza have what we would consider pretty low mintages.

I thought I would share two of my favorite Mexican Bullion coins presently in my collection....
The first two photos are of my 1985 Un Onza, beautiful design, these shots were taken to show the edge lettering, which reads 'INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD' - 'Independence and Liberty'.
and the last three photos are of my Mexico 1996 1/4 Onza, it has a reeded edge and is one of my favorite Mexican bullion coin designs. The 1996 1/4 Onza apparently has a mintage of 50,000.

Heh indeed, I noticed that right when I bought my first one, how it was thicker than the Bullion Ounces from Canada and such.... Very beautiful coins, and I like the edge lettering.

As far as the new ones, I like the sound of the one krispy was talking about 'Guerrero Aguila' = Warrior Eagle

We have several of these, too.

We have a few of this series. We pick them up (usually at just a few pesos over silver spot price) whenever we see them. We have several of the Aguila, as well as your Brasero Efigie. The Aguila and the Chaac Mool seem to be the most common ones available here in Guadalajara.

I'll be in Guadalajara later this year. Where do you buy your coins? Are there some coin dealers/shops that I can go to?

    Thanks!!

I've never personally bought silver coins in Mexico although there are appliance stores by the name of Elektra throughout Mexico who carry and sell silver onzas to anyone with money. Here's a link that describes the process. I wouldn't have a problem buying silver onzas from Elektra whatsoever, IMO it would be better than dealing with the banks which normally don't have any.

Places to buy coins in Guadalajara, Mexico

Hi. When are you coming to GDL?

We don't bother with coin dealers, though there are a few here. Like in the USA, they charge a premium for collector coins. We simply buy coins from the cambios (money exchange shops).

Whenever we see a cambio, we stop to see what they have and how much they charge. A few of them charge premiums for some coins, but most of them are happy to calculate the amount of silver content in a coin and then charge you the present silver spot price.

The downside of this is that some of the coins are not uncirculated, though many are. Some are even still enclosed in their little plastic envelopes in which they were issued. Some places will test with acid every single coin they buy from customers, which of course leaves a stain and damages the coin for collector value. Still, if the coin is rare enough, it will still have a collector value.

But if all you're looking to do is to acquire some silver coins, since silver price is increasing, Guadalajara is the place to buy.

If you let me know when you'll be in GDL (perhaps in a private message), and if we aren't busy, I'd be happy to show you a few of the places we check, whether you want a cambio or an actual coin dealer.

I won't be there until October. I am looking mostly for collector coins. I don't mind paying a little extra as long as it's not too much and as long as the coins are in good/great condition; the less circulated the better :) Maybe as October approaches we talk further about meeting :)

    Thanks!!

The coins at the coin dealer shops vary, but you can certainly buy the higher quality stuff there. And the prices here in Guadalajara are significantly lower than at US dealer shops. One dealer goes to the US a couple times a year, and he sometimes keeps some of his better coins to sell there, because he can get a much higher price in the US than he can around here.

So, bring some money for some coins when you visit GDL this autumn. We might be housesitting in Vancouver starting in October or November. If we're not here to show you, we can email you the locations of the coin dealer shops.

I appreciate the assistance :) I've looked online but couldn't find any listings for dealers. I have family there too but none of them collect coins so they really don't know where to go and I was even thinking about going to San Luis Potosi where the Mexican mint has a sales office there but then I read about the 2 American agents shot there with a fake road block and figured it was not worth it :(
