I'm not a coin collector, but I inherited some coins that I decided I wanted to sell, so I joined NGC to get the more valuable ones graded. I joined at the Premier level so my submission will include a coupon for 5 free Early Bird coins being graded.

I've filled out the online submission form which includes one Early Bird invoice with 5 coins worth a total of approximately $6,000 and one Early Bird invoice with 2 Morgan Dollars in their GSA holder worth approximately $1,000.

I indicated on the form that I would like the coins to be sent back to me all together via registered mail.

When the Order Summary came up, I noticed that the shipping and handling prices reported were different than the prices for these services that were in the Membership Packet NGC sent me.

On the online submission form, handling for each invoice is listed as $8. In the Membership packet, return postage/handling is listed as $5.25 for 1-3 coins, $8.50 for 4-6 coins, and $9.75 for 7-9 coins. So I would think that worst case scenario, I should be charged $8.50 + $5.25 = $13.75 for handling, not $16. And best case scenario they would lump all the coins together since I'm requesting they be shipped together: $9.75.

Shipping on the online submission form is listed as $45.95 "if shipped together." Since the postage/handling fee has been calculated separately, I can only assume that this cost represents insurance coverage only. In the membership packet, insurance is listed as $14.45 for a value between $500.01 - $1,000, $21.20 for a value between $5000.01 - $6,000, and $22.55 for a value of $6000.01 - $7,000. Worst case scenario here would be $21.20 + $14.45 = $35.65, but since it pointed out this is the cost if they are shipped together, I would think I'd get the lower combined insurance cost of $22.55.

Can anybody help me understand the discrepancies?

I had a question with them recently when submitting coins to 3 separate tiers (modern, regular, and crossover). they said just write on all forms "ship with -------, the 1st forms # and combine. I suggest calling them and get it from the horses mouth and get a name just in case. They have always been very helpful to me on the phone and I'm a dolt so you should do fine.

I have a thread on here that will walk you through the whole submission process. As far as the shipping discrepancy. I too scratched my head and figured it was the insurance since I was claiming over 5k value. I'll find the thread and link it. brb! :)

link to thread, not sure it will clarify anything as far as shipping goes. http://www.cointalk.com/t145199/
