I haven’t been able to find another Denver minted silver bicentennial quarter anywhere can someone please help me out with what this could be worth?
the MINT released a Bicentennial Silver Proof Set. But it was S Mint Mark with a weight of 5.75 grams. The regular Quarter was 5.67 grams. you'll need a jewelry scale (not a food scale) to properly weigh your quarter. more than likely it's a regular Denver quarter with a worn edge.
This is it next to another bicentennial quarter. I waited though, and it only weighs 5.58 g what the heck?
Pretty good bet that it was plated by someone. That would be my suspicion until I had the opportunity to investigate it further. Most any coin shop would have the equipment to test the silver content.
Agreed,most likely plated based on the edge interference,but miracles can happen!!!.Also you probably got a few finger prints on the coin the way you held it.Always hold a coin by the edge only if needed and try to limit contact the most you can.
Probably struck on a light planchet…AND, I have also seen clad coins, including those from the Bicentennial years, be struck where no copper shows on the edge. You can find info on the Bicentennial coinage in your Yeoman Red Book. It will tell you whether or not the Denver Mint struck any silver coins for this date…Spark BTW, the edge does look plated.
along the left edge of that quarter you can see copper. The "depth" of that copper is not as much as the comparison quarter, but it is visible there.
Best way is to take it to a coin shop or jeweler with a handheld XRF. A plated coin will show a little Ag and a lot of Ni and Cu. A normal clad will have no silver I believe your piece is clad and the metal smeared on the edge during striking (smeared edges do occur occasionally during the striking process). If you see ANY copper, no matter how small, its clad. No questions FYI. If you managed to beat the extremely low probability and actually have something, it will have to be authenticated by a TPG. Just saying it looks silver or posting pics on a chat board doesn't even come close to the proof required to show its a significant find.
