Hello all, I just have a couple of newbie questions. Got my Red Book today and was about to start some roll searching some pennys and dimes curious if there is anything other than the dates of 1909, 1914, 1922, and 1931 on the pennys and 1916 on the dimes I should look for. Also what power loupe should I be using. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks..!!
Uh... pull any wheats, any silver, etc. There's plenty of dates besides what's listed in redbook that are worth money... your odds of finding a true rarity (IE; key dates that you listed, for example) are very, very slim, though. I use a 10x, but find it lacking at times, so I picked up a 20x as well yesterday. As far as advice, this is THE thread on roll-searching here at CT... http://www.cointalk.com/showthread.php?t=10176 Feel free to ask questions and whatnot in there, it usually will get one of the regular repliers' attention pretty quick.
haha krispy shhhh. I think Merc pretty much covered it. Dimes are 90% silver everything 1964 and older. 1965 began the copper-nickel coinage. Keep an eye out for half dollars, and Eisenhower dollars when you are at the banks!
Yeah, ask for 'em every time. Halves, 1964 and earlier are 90% silver, 1965-1970 are 40% silver. Both are nice scores. I ask at every bank I stop at for 'em... ya never know when you'll hit paydirt. I pick up Ikes too, to look for the FEV (Friendly Eagle Variety) and '72 Type 2 (No islands in the carribbean) and to sell the rest on eBay.
When searching through rolls or pocket change I use a 5x magnifier and a 10x Loupe. That is all you really need for this type of job. Good luck and I hope you find some real significant coins!
