I can't imagine what the reason is for these 2 listings This one closed with 14 bids. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEDWX:IT#ht_500wt_950 This one has reopened and looks to me like the same coin with altered certification number. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180614070956#ht_500wt_950
nevermind... the bar codes are different... just a coincidence that the cert numbers are similar the 45 looks like it was turned in to a 15
This is Harlan J Berk out of Chicago, 31 N Clark St. These people are fine folks, have been in business for years and are totally on the up and up. I have bought from their store many times when in Chicago on business trips. Tom DeLorey who used to publish "Collectors Clearinghouse" in Coin World still works there, as does Bob Greenstein. Tom DeLorey is one of America's most respected numismatists. I don't know Harlan J Berk personally but I wager he has sterling credentials as well.
Harlan Berk is a quality dealer with a stellar reputation (unlike many eBay sellers). I have a great deal of difficulty believing anything is amiss with their offerings.
Jeez. The two coins are DIFFERENT GRADES, people! Somebody obviously sent in a roll or two. Some people should think before they type.
It's cool. I buy a lot off of eBay and I do my best to be wary. I'll put bids in mass and check back the following day. There have been occasions, more than once where I didn't win by a bid and then look down at the bottom of the page, where eBay sends you that - "IF YOU LIKED THIS ITEM THEN MAYBE YOU WILL LIKE THESE" and saw the same coin I didn't win relisted. I'm sure some sellers schill bid the coins if they think it's going to close too low. As I said I am wary and now, I post to call out these sellers I suspect. THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THEM I had to look at the listings several times. Even the 64/65 is a bit blurry on both listings, the coin has the same greenish hue, cert number is blurry just like how they turn a 1944 into a 1914..... Thats why it I started off my initial post, " Not sure why someone would do this" .....anyways. I couldn't find a way to delete the thread.
Not only is Mr. Berk's reputation unquestionable he has further impressed me with the YN program that he sponsors through the ANA. My son will be recieving a nice collection of ancient coins over the next year or so thanks to Mr Berk donating all the coins for the program. Richard
I'm not doubting the coin dealer's rep, but it seems that they should understand the value of better pictures. Anytime I see a blurry or low quality picture I get suspicious. Doesn't mean I won't buy the coin, but it is a strike against the seller.
So... is it common here for folks to bîtch about how others post? Honest question. I'm trying to get a feel for the place.
Don't you just hate it when you go and do something that at first looks like its a scam only to have it turn out just boneheaded dumb? And then all the minions get worked into flutter even though you and others have pointed out the inaccuracies of the post? Look for the "EDIT" button to edit your post.
It's called " Foot N Mouth " disease . The positive side of things is , that anyone who read this thread , now knows that if MR.Berk's initials is on a holder , any top tier TPG"S holder , you know it's the real deal . Unquestionably . To further credit him, he is one of the foremost astute Dealer's of U.S. and Ancient coinage.
I'd also like to vouch for HJB. I recently started going to their store in Chicago and have always been treated well. What I like about them is that they keep their website updated with most of the coins they have in stock. Cleaned / problem coins are clearly identifed and everything has a price on it.
naaaaaa.... I thought about for a second and thought it a little educational. The best point in this thread is that if the seller notices it that maybe he will post better pics. Fuzzy pics is a first warning sign for me that the coin isn't all it should be. See comment below... a real PCGS slab for sure! I would think that 65RD-VDB would sell in a heartbeat for $120 or $150 for that matter at his B&M store, baffling.. but hey good for us eBayers - more crappy pics please..
