I was wondering how big a half dime is. I found a small coin metal detecting today and it is slightly smaller than a dime and it has reeded edges. I would know what it is but it has a layer of crap on both sides, but on one side its thinner and theres a small patch of silver showing.

since you have a the coin in hand, can you make anything out so you can google it/? Depending on the type of Half dime, they are about 15.5 mm and 1,35 grams

edit: spelling and a little slow :)

Can you post a picture of it. If it measures 15.5 it can be a capped bust or Liberty seated with plain obverse or with stars on the obverse.
    Now I wanna know....LOL

Maybe someone can teach you how to destroy it. I mean, clean it without any damage to it...LOL

She's a goner! When I get something like this, I'll use denture tablets to try to loosen the crud. Then, a brass brush.

Yeah I agree. I can't even begin to tell what it is by the pictures....maybe not the brass brush though.

Here's a Canadian large cent that I dug up a couple of years ago. It was so encrusted that it was impossible to clean using simple things like distilled water. I had to use at least half a dozen denture tablets to loosen some of the material and then when it would no longer work, I used the brass brush to get some of the rest of it off. As soon as I was able to see the date, I left it alone. It's not a key date and it's only a filler.

Now, that looks like a candidate for the "soak-in-water-and-then-freeze" treatment. Or the ultrasonic cleaner.

I tried the freezing method and it removed a little of the crust. If I wanted to go further, I could use electrolysis but there's no point because the coin would be severely pitted anyway and all I wanted to see was the date. Besides, I know someone that disintegrated a mid-19th century coin with electrolysis.
