Well, try as I might, even with a 10X loupe I can't read the last two digits on this wheatie that I picked up in change today. Oh well....

    I think the 3rd number is a 4.

I think 11-d, based on spacing of the visible vertical traces left... l wonder what others will say....

Wear or grease clog but I lean toward wear I think.

  7. I am an optimist and hope that it is a 1914-D. :smile TC

From what I can make of it you are looking at a 1914. Can not say for sure. I also can see a faint mint mark that if I had to venture a guess it would be an S.

    I'd say 14d also.

At first I thought the same thing and still thinking that is it or a 14-s.

Please take a picture directly in front of the coin and not at an angle.

Looks like a 44 to me. I've got a few junk silver coins that I can't tell the date on but I can still sell them for junk if and when the time comes.

I agree that the 3rd number could very well be a 4.

1947 or 1917. I do not think that last number is a 4. The | on the 4's were perpendicular. That last number is slanted.

    I'm leaning 1947, but could be 1917.

I have to agree. If it was a 1914-D, then the 4 would be too close to the second 1.

I have changed my mind on the 3rd digit. It's a 1. IMO, there's no way that last number is a 4 unless it was mistruck.

    This is my final answer.

Wow, thats harder to read than my 1898-O barber dime.

    I think it looks like a 1917-D

I overlaid a 1911-D onto the op's picture. As best I can figure, your are correct with the 1917. The 191 line up correctly, but the last digit is skewed to the last one in my coin.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen... I believe the coin is too far gone, and there appears to be a little damage around the date. It could be any of the above mentioned dates! The pics are the best I can do with my old Sony Mavica:

From the first pictures, I would say 1917-S. The latest look like 1961-S. This is a wheatie reverse, isn't it?

My best guess is a 1914 D. I've never seen a 40's cent with that much wear.
