Do you guys see any reason to save 1983 washington quarter business strikes in grades lower than MS? I have been saving them because of Numismedia price guides indicate at even the lower grades they command a premium from any other clad dates. Here is a link to that price guide. I guess the same question also applies to the Jefferson nickes, 82 P, 82 D, 83D and p, 84 P, 86 D, 92 P....
I doubt they will be worth much more than face in the long run. They have mintages of several hundred million. Charlie
If you can find the coins in high XF or better grades for face value, then yes it will probably turn out to be worth while. Any lower than that and you'll have a looooooooong wait.
If you are lucky enough to have saved original unopened Fed/bank shotgun rolls...they routinely sell on ebay for $250 - $300 or more. But yah...lower grades...I see and spend spend them all the time.
OK, I guess I'll take a look at what I've got and see if anything is in EF or better. My recollection is that they are not even close. In fact, I've noticed that the mint marks on these quarters, as a rule, are barely more than blobs of metal. For the most part, they are the ugliest things I have ever seen called a coin (except, of course, for SBA's and Sac's..). In almost every case, the mint mark on these quarters you need a magnifying glass to determine if it's a D or P. However, I digress.....I guess I'll spend whatever is in lower grade than XF. Do you concur on the same approach for the Jefferson nickels of that same time period?
I picked this one up at my dealer a couple of weeks ago. I was looking for a nice 1955 D and he brought out an unc set that someone had sold him and I asked if it had an 83P in it. He said "yeah and pulled it out for me to look at. It's nicked up on the obverse, but the reverse is nice and I can't see any wear, so I asked what he wanted and he looked in his CDN and was shocked at how much it said. He goes, "that can't be right, well how about $15, then?" So I bought it. WHat grade do you think it is? I'm not great with the MS grades. Obv: Rev:
I'm not knocking the coin CT, but there weren't any mint sets in 1983. They did sell souvenir sets however. As for grade MS61/62.
no, I meant an uncirculated set of Washingtons 1932-1998 in a Dansco Album that someone had assembled. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I agree with your grade by the way, I'd been looking for an Unc 83P in every shop I've visited for about a year and this was the first one I'd seen, so I jumped on it. Now all I need is 39 more and I can roll them up and sell them as an uncirculated roll!
