Going through a roll of 1955-D jefferson nickles my Father marked ( FILLED IN D+D/5) i googled and looked in my 3 redbooks and can't find out what this means .Can someone help me out please??Thank you very much
Well, it could mean a re-punched mintmark and filled in means that on the inside of the D it would looked clogged or filled in I imagine.
Maybe he means a 1955 D/S. It is a real Jefferson Variety, but one I don't have, and one I don't have photos of for comparison purposes.
My guess would mean that the roll is all 1955-D & 1955-D/S. We really can't tell anything from the photo you posted. What we really need is a closeup of the mintmark. I stated earlier that I don't own a 1955-D/S. That statement was not entirely true. What I meant to say was I don't own the 1955-D/S OMM-001. There are 10+ varieties of the 1955-D/S and I own one of the lesser varieties. Here are some photos: I have no idea if your father's repunched mintmarks are the lesser variety or the OMM-001 which is rather pronounced. If he has any of the OMM-001, the mintmark will clearly show both letters. The overlapping mintmarks will look much more like the 1942-D over Horizontal D and the 1946-D over Horizontal D. I have both of those coins and their mintmarks are shown below. See how the letters overlap in the last two examples posted. That is what you are looking for in the mintmark. The lesser varieties are really not worth much more than the regular 1955-D and I would bother chasing them, especially since you can't attribute them.
My camera works best with natural light so tomorrow i will retake. However the Mint mark is simular to your pics and theres 1 thats looks totally filled in also Windows Veiwer usaually is a free program with all PC'S and you can zoom close enough to see the mint mark. Thanks for all the useful Data ..
I got a better look at 10 of the Nickles and compared them to the Pictures you have above. The (D) mint mark on the nicks i have seemed more filled in.There are 2 of the them that seem to have a extra mark on top and bottom of the (D) they have curviture to them also..I been trying all day to get settings on camera right but nada!!.i will have to wait another day because natural lite is fading ,I did manage a 5 picture album that works well with Windows Picture veiwer,i tried to put 22 pictures in album but they wouldnt allow them because the file was to large..I need my smaller camera to get the pictures you require i think..Thanks Carl
