I am reading through QDB's new book(The Experts Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins). In the section on copper coins he says, "What I used to do in my set was to take modern issues and coat them on each side with clear fingernail polish, which easily removed if desired, but in the meantime acts as an excellent shield against the pieces' turning color." Has anyone else ever tried this? I would think that it would tone them, instead of keeping them red. Charlie
I've read it before....but it was DQB that said it then too I've never tried it or heard of anyone doing....wonder what would happen... Speedy
The key comment is - "what I used to do...." if you write to him and ask he'll tell you he doesn't do it anymore. And he won't recommend you do it now. As with many things in coin collecting, there are fads. And at one point in time a great many collectors, even advanced collectors like QDB, used to coat their coins with shellac, lacquer or clear fingernail polish. That's because there simply wasn't a good way to store your coins and keep them from toning. But I'll bet you won't find many doing it now. And if you tried to sell some of those coins, you'd have a hard time doing so. Trust me - don't do it.
i got a bag of weatys a good many years back and they all had a fine coat of wax on them made them all shiny but as they were all circulated no big thing coggie
