hi all, i picked up a bag of wheat cents this morning and i would like any information on key dates and mint marks to look for, one of them is definitely a white metal (steel) from the war period. my knowledge of US coins is very basic and any help would really be appreciated.
the 1909-s vbd is always one to look out for i dont really know a great deal about them and only have a couple commen date ones. sure some one will come along and fill your boots with information on them as they are one of the most commonly collected coin there are
i know 1909 is an imoprtant year for them as both the indian head type and the lincoln were minted. i prefer the indian head to be honest . if i had my coin guide book with me i could help more because it has about 4 pages just on the wheaties.
cheers calum i am sure that eyeeatwheaties will be along soon to give me a full run down. like you though i prefer the indian head and the flying eagle cents to the lincolns.
i keep sort of accidentaly buying american coins i have 3 indian heads 2 kenndy halfs couple of wheaties and roosies and a fair bit of other stuff even though i dont collect them.
same here the only ones i have collected purposely were the state quarters, but i have found that for some reason i have quite a lot of US coins besides.
thats brilliant collecto 1966, i will be able to catalogue them easily, hope i find a 1955 s.................
Glad to be of service. Good luck with your treasure hunt. Maybe you can return the favor-- like helping me to figure out the values of some hammered coins-- a shilling and sixpence from QE I (sixpence is dated 1564, shilling is undated), a penny from (supposedly) Edward I, and a very crude groat depicting Charles I but apparently struck under Charles II.
surprisingly even though they are so old and very beautiful the eliabeth the first shilling are quite cheap i saw one last week for £20 and that seems around what a lot of others go for. as for the groats depending on condition i wouldnt pay over £10
I'm disappointed to hear about the shilling-- I paid the Japanese equivalent of £30 for it several years ago. Maybe I can find an American English teacher who would be willing to pay me what I paid for it? The groat is even more disappointing. Maybe an American collector would be willing to pay more for such a thing (since Charles I and II were both kings of the American colonies).
for your edward penny try this for id www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=1109 , but as with the shilling they are surprisingly not worth a great deal perhaps around £50
a lot depends on condition. also it may be different in other countries then it is in the uk but i dont know. here is a groat that is around the price i was talking about http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mary-Hammered..._Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item43a46c805c but in better condition they can go for much much more. prices vary huglly to be honest with the seller. with british coins age doesnt always reflect the price
