If you reread George's post he stated that silver value would be approx $24 My price was based on the greyshet ask/bid of fine which is 3450/3750 so on the low end being a details coin I said $3k with the high end of $4k
Oh, great, the one coin that turns up buried in the earth and isn't a common date... the Morgan collectors are probably going to roast me for my value estimate!
Well I can tell you 100% for sure that it was dug up in a flowerbed in our yard. I know nothing more of its authenticicty and suppose a previous tenant could have lost their morgan fake while gardening but it seems unlikley to me. It sounds like I should take the coin to a reputable dealer, have it authenticated, then have it sent in for grading. Can anyone suggest a coin dealer in the Portland, OR area or will any coin dealer do?
I would take it to Doug Winters although his specialty is gold but here is a short list. I don't know anything about Steve Estes but he suppose to specialize in silver dollars http://www.money.org/ana_custom/dea...earch_type=2a&city=Portland&state_province=OR
hmmmm all I can say is send in the coin to NGC or PCGS ... if it comes back anything but not genuine is maybe worth silver...if genuine your looking at a vrey desirable coin worth thousands..but really "found in flowerbed" thats sureal
Even cleaned with all those nicks, $1k+ IMO. and would not be surprised to see it get to 2k. Very rare piece. Fewer than 10k believed to still exist. Definently look up PCGS website and arrange sending it to them.
shouldnt the coin look worse having been burried in the ground for a number of years? i've seen people post coins on this site that they found in the ground with metal detectors -- and they always look bad. on the coin posted ... i would guess fake just based on the story and how it looks ... however i am not an expert on fakes
I'm sorry, but I'm skeptical on its authenticity. I have an 1893 CC that looks very similar, and I'm almost certain it's a chinese fake (considering it was purchased FROM a chinese vendor known to sell fakes on eBay!). I would very much like to hear anyone's arguments for the case that this coin is authentic, because I'm not convinced. ______________________ Download ps3 games Burn PS3 games
Take a magnet to it and hold your breath and cross your fingers. Next weigh it against another morgan or peace dollar or better yet use a digital coin scale. Then hold two morgans together and check for correct diameter. Refer to any coin book for weights and measurements i. e. The Official Redbook, A Guide Book of United States Coins.
A damaged '93-S is still an expensive coin, imo, the coin looks like it has VF Details. Looking on Heritage, I can't find a Damaged/Details graded VF selling for under $2000 (most are in the $2000-$3000 range). With that said, I'm not sure if the coin is genuine or counterfeit. My initial thought was counterfeit, because this is one of the most heavily counterfeited Morgan dollars (and something about it just looked off), but I can't definitely find anything that identifies it as a counterfeit. The date looks right (it lines up with the right denticles and is the right height), the mm (from the pics) looks good, and the overall details look right too. I would call it genuine, but there's one thing that bothers me, LIBERTY (the lettering on the obv), the details in the letters get pretty weak towards the end, and RT are barely visible. This isn't an area that is weakly struck, and even in AG examples, all letters are still clearly visible. The RT in Liberty is a very important area for the '93-S, because there are two key identifiers in those letters; 2 small die gouges in the first foot of the R, and a die scratch through the middle of the top of the T. See the second pic here (1893-S) for an example. Having the coin weighed is a good start, the correct weight should be very close to 26.73 grams. Counting the reeds should help too, a genuine '93-S should have a edge reed count of 187. I'd also check for the die markers I listed above.
The first thing I would do is tell your dad to get a metal detector and scour that flower bed and the area around it too! Nice find, hope its authentic.
