love those old turbun head $10 gold pieces ... is it true the size of those are more like the $20 gold pieces than the $10 Liberty and Indian produced later?
Boating accident? (I guess I shouldn't be surprised, with all the gold that's been recovered from shipwrecks, but it's not something I think about as a modern-day occurrence...)
Winged Liberty - those are $5 Half Eagles. The mint halted production of the Eagle in 1804, not resuming production of them until 1838. Also, there were no Eagles produced in 1802. The diameter of the early (1795-1829) HEs are noticeably larger than the HE's of 1829-1929 (the mint reduced the planchet size mid-1829). The early HEs are closer in size to a quarter, whereas the later date HEs are roughly the size of a nickel. regards, dude
Did the boating accident result in the purchase of a boat in exchange for your gold, or were you doing something crazy like smuggling eagles in a boat?
I only have 2 gold pieces, neither or which are US. A 1945 2 1/2 peso (a tiny piece that I'll try and scan) and a Zeppelin medal that's worth quite a bit over melt. I'm tempted to sell the Mexican 2.5 peso with gold up so insanely - it only has 0.0602 troy ounce (AGW), but that's still worth ~$80. There are a few early commemoratives and so-called dollars that I'd much rather have for that price...
Both my wife and I own gold coins. I don't get to see them often enough because they "live" in a safety deposit box at my bank.
Bought a 2010 AGE 1/4 Proof from the Mint last week, should arrive today looks like the 2010 1/4 oz is one of the lower production years.. My dad bought me a 2001 AGE 1/4 Proof for Christmas that year.. my first official gold coin.
When gold reached $900/oz I sold all my 1984 Olympic coin sets and Gold eagles...dumb, dumb dumb!!! Recently I acquired some Liberty First Spouse coins:
I like keeping my coins close to me at all times. The boat was a friends, we took our coins out on the lake to enjoy looking at them in the sun that reflected off of the water.
I have a total of eight gold coins from $1 to $20 St.Gaudens but I agree with many of you that I don't know anybody that isn't a collector that has any gold of any type. GeorgeM - that is one sweet set - so where exactly are you in Texas?
