Hello all, I am 40 yrs old and I am a new member to this site but I have been reading alot on here for the past two weeks or so. I have gotten some coins from my grandparents years ago and just really have gotten interested in this hobby about a month ago. My questions are what are some of the key dates or dates of coins that would be valuable to start a collection. The coins I have an intrest in are Lincoln pennys and mercury dimes. Im also wondering the same on quarters, nickels, halves, and dollars. Thanks for the help..!!

  3. Welcome to CT!

Lincoln Cent: 1909S VDB is the ultimate key date.
Mercury Dime: 1916D is the ultimate key date.

The Red Book should have all the info you need. TC

Most 1964 or prior U.S coinage has a certain silver content and are all collectible. Kennedy halves up to 1970 also have silver content. There are also many different key dates of others coins. Get a Red Book. That'd be a good place to begin.

Welcome to the forum. Your question has been answered but I would add the 1942 over 1 overdates to the list of keys for Mercury Dimes. Here is a nice key date for ya!

    Welcome!

When you get the Redbook -- just look for the highest price ones. :)
