I love wheat pennies, I don't know why! All that I know is I love the back with the two wheats, and the words "One Cent" between the two stalks. If I can find any wheat penny that I can take, I buy it! Post you results here!
A box of $25 worth of cents usually nets around 7-10 wheaties....then return the rest. It is a no risk deal...
I would roll search or go to a coin shop....but don't pay more than 2 cents each for the common dates.
They are going from 5 to 10 cents each per wheat cents at the auction that I've been going to. I stop at 4 cents.
Well, the wheat cents are worth 2.9 cents in intrinsic value. The market value at auctions are going about double that price these days. It may be 2 cents if you sell them to a dealer but the dealer needs to make money.
coinlover, I've either was gifted the wheaties, which is many but not most of the dates, or I've scooped them out of the cash register at my place of work. I even have the ladies I work with keep all the cool finds, many many canadian, european, whatever money! Latest find was an Ike Dollar! My first =]
I paid as much as 8 bucks for a roll in the hopes of scoring some decent key dates. It's like gambling, and buddy it's always fun to bust a roll open. I've watched people pay upwards of 25-35 bucks for a 50 cent roll of wheaties! Freaking Insane!!! Unsearched - yea right!!! Most I paid, and I think I did pretty good, was for (8) rolls of Mint sealed uncirc 2009's. LP1-4 P&D $21.00 bucks! I think the mint sold these for 8.99 for a pair of P&D...
I have had the good fortune to have friends in the past with large hoards of cents. I have offered to roll them if I can look through them for wheat cents, Canadian cents, any foreign coppers and S-mint-marked Lincoln cents from 1968-1974 and pay them for every cent I have found. The largest hoard I went through with my mother's assistance was a 5-gallon water bottle filled with 35,000 cents. About 2,000 wheats, Canadian and assorted British, Bahamian, Bermudian and Barbadian cents (or pennies) were found. Lots of fun! When I was in banking, one weekend more than 20 years ago, I obtained six $50 bags of cents and found over 2,300 wheats, 800 Canadian and even three Indian Head Cents, plus I purchased 74 rolls of wheat cents from a lady in Saratoga Springs. I obtained more wheat cents in October 1988 alone than I had found in circulation since I began collecting in 1969.
I remember looking for wheats as early as 1967 and couldn't find many in circulation. I got real excited when I found a 1944 and a 1957 in change at the same time back in 1968 or 69. It seemed like nearly everyone was saving wheat cents back then.
Not to change Coinlover's topic , but I too am infatuated with Lincoln Wheat Cents ( and I really cannot explain why ). Since becoming interested in exploring the possibility of collecting coins about 1 year ago , I have finally gotten to a place where I want only Wheat cents in high grades , rare dates or both. I am now at a crossroads. Recently I have been snatching up as many OBW (original bank wrapped) solid date rolls of Wheat Cents from 1956 or earlier. Part of me wants to open them to search for gems. The other part of me sees the prices for OBW pre-1950's rolls going right through the roof , like $200.00 to $2,000.00+ per roll. Do others here save the rolls intact or open them ?
