Whaddaya guys think of this coin? I know the boxes they put these caused them to tone... but why the strange tone on the obverse. Thoughts? I thought it was cool. Matt
Nice looking dollar. I actually have three of these in the original packaging that are really nice looking and have also toned very colorfully. I have no idea what caused the unique obverse toning on this example. I think they were issued obverse down in the cases but i could be wrong. They were originally issued in jewelry style "clam shell" cases with just a plastic insert to hold the coin. This was before they placed them in lenses. The inside of the "clam shells" has a red velvet like material. When i get some time this week i will post pictures of my three. I don't really collect Canadian, but i picked mine up at a very low price from an ebay seller whom i had done business with in the past. One look at all the colors and i knew i had to have them.
I have one of these and the 1973 RCMP Dollar. Both have crazy obverse toning from their case but do not have the half moon like yours.
It looks like either another coin rested partially on it, or the coin slipped partially out of the recess that was supposed to hold it in place.... and stayed that way for years.
