Here we go again guys. Here we are presented with a coin where just one point in grade can be thousands of dollars. This coin is in the original GSA plastic. It will also be going to NGC within the week for grading. So what do YOU grade this coin?

MS63. She has a few small hits on her face, but what is the (bright) mark on the top of the eagle's head?

    *Pcgs MS-63
    * but may grade it a MS-62

I think it's just the way the light caught the design. There isn't any damage or anything there.

I would grade it an MS-62 just bec. of all the contact marks

Actually I'd say it's AU, that one has a bit more than the normal frost breaks. I'd say it's light wear. But I have no doubt they will say 63.

edit - just as a point of interest, compare this one to the '90-CC that Matt posted and you should see the differences to explain my reasoning.

I also believe a 63, but that spot on the reverse scares me. 62 would not surprise me at all.

I would say it is a pretty strong MS63. I doubt it would go 64. Just a bit too much goin on with liberty's cheek and what looks like a fairly nice hit behind the cap. Still too nice in my opinion for anything below 63. Unless you crack it out of the GSA holder; then there may be an outside chance of 58.

Too much chatter on the obv to get 63. I'd buy it at 62.

Also, your pics aren't clear enough. Please confirm VAM 3, capped die... http://www.vamworld.com/1879-CC+VAM-3

If it is VAM 3, be sure to have NGC attribute that coin. It's worth the extra cost for the VAM attribution, even though the capped die is supposedly not worth as much as the other varieties in that grade.

    It is the capped die.

Are you sure it's a capped die? Even with my glasses, the mintmark looks awfully clean. Can you give me a close-up of the mintmark? Maybe then, I'll be able to see it.

    Thanks,

    Chris

I would call it a 62. Just too much chatter on the obverse, but could be the big pictures. Now my real question is - is that a chunk missing from the rim at about 2 o'clock? Would that be considered damage?

I SUCK at grading Morgans! I will say what I think, though regardless how wrong everyone else is!!! LOL

    I grade it a 62. I think that NGC will grade it a 63.

I agree that the cheek marks are unattractive, but most of them are not dings, but "roll friction" type marks.

That's what I see. But if you have read this and think I am unhinged, refer to line #1 of this post! :)

    On the reverse?

That's just part of the GSA black plastic insert. There is no damage there.

MS 61/2. 63 would be way to generous.

    No question! You are right.

Darn, I just got these glasses three months ago, and I couldn't even see it with them.

    Thanks!

Now for the other end of the scale is the 1879-CC which was recently sold for me. I believe it was a clear CC variety.
