I received these two coins in my change recently, and was hoping someone here could let me know if these are error coins or post mint damage. Thanks.
The cent looks like a 'glue job', or a 'squeezejob', the letters are reversed, so it was caused by another cent, post mint. The nickel looks like a clip, need close-ups to quantitatively verify.- the edges don't seem to flow like they are spoze to. EDIT - after further inspection, I believe it's a good clip. Notice the rim weakness above the 'U' in United States, this is the Blakeslee effect, commonly seen in genuine clipped planchet strikes.
"For those of you who don't know about the Blakesley Effect, when a partial (clipped) planchet is fed into the upsetting mill to form the edge, the pressure drops to zero when it reaches the missing portion. This also causes the pressure to be reduced on the opposite edge of the planchet, i.e. 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, and the rim is not as well formed as it should be. Once in the coining chamber, this weakness of the opposite rim will appear as a weak strike with less than sharp details." Above quote is copied from a post by CMP9ball, a member here. Thank you, I appreciate the time you put into digging that up, never knew about such an effect... without a doubt a useful reference tool when trying to determine the PMD or error nature of these clips.
Thanks for the info, I just have the scanner here, but I will try to get a hold of a camera to take some close up picutes of the nickel.
