i responed earlier to the post on cleaning and melting or whatever.so i ask.this coin had dirt and soil and i washed it wish liquid soap a few times. if i had left it,hum well i knew
it had potential .so i wanted it to look as sharpe as possible.is it a nice coin? did i do wrong by cleaning it? is it a shame? do museums clean there coins? must we be so judgemental with the cleaning of coins as a non no. i have asked question before im no pro but wanted to learn and ask. and sometime i did not get a response to the question.all i recieved for an answer was hum looks cleaned to me.i have some coins with great potential to look good. but unfortunately. i have not the wealth to buy world grade coins. so i sit in my little happy world hoping to build a collectionm that looks good to me.why is the world of coin collecting so against cleaning. if a coin say is green and horrible, then you can see the potential of howa cleaning would bring out the beauty then why bash it.if you buy an antique car and it has rust
or a flat or a tore seat .you put it in a car show do you present it with the present condition or do you restore it. on that note tell me what you think of these pics.
does it look that bad.ok i admit you can see how the cleaning may have leeft a wipe mark but i think its a nice coin and im proud to be the owner.so please if i ask a question
because i want to learn can someone please help me along with out answering with a commet like HUM LOOKS CLEANED TO ME on the other hand i love the site have made some great friends and have learned alot .i continue to learn and appriciate every comment. so on that note. please comment on this coin, grade with out the fact it was washed.. toddscoinspics 146.jpg toddscoinspics 147.jpg ,, toddscoinspics 159.jpg toddscoinspics 160.jpg

99% of the coin collecting community would tell you that you did a "no-no" by cleaning it with liquid soap. the first pic you posted has cleaning lines on it, which is a tell-tale sign of cleaning. as for a grade... well, you can't give a grade without taking into consideration the fact that it was cleaned. a "details" grade could be given (i'm not familiar enough with canadian coins to give a grade), but the accurate grade would be lower than the "details" grade due to the cleaning.

    So where's the cleaning?

Improper cleaining can damage a coin. Sure, the coin may look "clean" and "bright" to the untrained eye but a knowledgeable collector will notice the microscopic (or larger) scratches on the surface of the coin.

    cleaning

i guess the fact that it was washed, would be considered cleaning. so i have been told by some.other research suggests that washing is acceptable..hum beats me

some people will buy cleaned coins (usually at a lowered price), some won't. it's all personal preference.

The 50c piece looks scrubbed and cleaned, it's got hairlines all over it. If you did that then I am afraid that you severely devalued the coin. It's also irreversible.

    50 cent clean

im thinking its still soap lines as i can rub it off with my finger or cloth. just the way i rubbed it makes it look at way the line runs. i have nothing to lose so i will rerinse it and wipe the palmovive off lol. then post a new pic..tomorow.see if theres a difference then. mean while if the cleaning lines were not on it what grade would you put the coin at.the dirt if left there would not have shown the beauty of the coin.its not a resell item for me its a personal good looking coin in my eyes..thoughts on grade if it wasnt cleaned thanks

Those are almost certainly surface hairlines and the damage is irreversible. My guess is that the coin was an XF, worth about $40-50, now? My guess is $15-20 since it's been cleaned.

The only safe thing to dip a NON-COPPER coin into is Acetone. And even then the key word is DIP or SOAK, do NOT brush ANYTHING across the coin's surface.

Rubbing and wiping a coin are forms of mechanical cleaning that will almost always damage the surface of the coin.

rld? for you are you familiar with the book prices on the newfoundland 50 cent piece of 1904 as i am using the charlton guide for canada coins 2011 and it states that vf20 is around the price you quoted.au50 is 200 ms60 450 and then up..it just seemed to me that some of the coins sold on dealer sites dont seem as i good shape and have a higher rating.but im not a very knowledgeable person in this field. so basically what i needed to know was if it wasnt cleaned what grade it would have been.in all due respect i appriciate the response. thanks again:) . Seems so many books and dealers have so many different prices for coins in a similar graded state. when someone grades a coin in a book say as a au50 one book may say 100.00 then another 55.00 and then another 250.00 so i guess unless you try to sell it ,and see what you get who is the best to believe when i comes to the true book value...oh well its all a learning experience.

How? By more rubbing and wiping? You cannot undo damage. Once damaged, always damaged.
