to my knowledge it wasnt cleaned i bought it several years ago. unless the prevous owner cleaned it. i dont clean anything my self.i have id say 150 newfoundland coins and around 4 or 500 canada.im very afraid of cleaning. when my batteries charge ill take a pic of the other side. but the question in the mean time is ? the mint mark an off center error

Sure seems to be...my example in my collection is centred, and Charton makes no mention of an off centred variety. As far as the cleaning comment, Im just very sceptical of a circulated coin that old not having any grime on it. No chance its a Chinese fake?
Can't wait to see the obverse

I will agree that it looks to have been cleaned as well.

    cleaning

the only cleaning some of my coins may get is a wash under soapy water if to dirty for my liking. but then only dabbed with a soft cloth or paper towel. but certainly not a habit..i have a few old old coins that are very dirty but im afraid to do any cleaning on them..what to do with the green crap on large cents i dont know..any suggestion from anyone.is a soap bath a bad thing on certain coins? the question on the post of my 1872 25 cent piec e was more about the mint mark not centered. does anyone else have a coin thats off center , is it common or rare? thanks guys

All and all a very nice coin Maggie. Don't get me wrong, not suggesting you cleaned it, but perhaps before you owned it.
I have looked through a number of Charlton catelogues to see if I can find anything on the off-centre Heaton mint mark and I came up with nada...zilch.
Im hoping the more knowledgeable member can pipe in, grab the ball. and run with it pertaining to this coin as a whole..including its grade.
Quite frankley, after seeing the obverse, I love it because I still see some shiny lustre on it.
Other people may suggest you soaking your greened crap coins in 100% acetone, but Id wait for formal advise.

thanks for the advice and info.

i wasnt sure if the off center mint mark was a mistrike of sorts ,as i havevery little knowledge still learning. as for the green on the large cents is because i have several old canada large cents. around the 1859 era that need to be cleaned so i can make them decent to identify and enjoy

    1872 25 cent mint mark

thanks for the info and from what i know your right. however there a bunch of variations of this coin coin is listed in the charlton guide but states that none are known to exsist i cant identify what variation this is. mainly because of experience. the fact that the h mint mark is off centered is what im curious about.its off centered and seems to be joined to the left bottom.was there many other coins like it? is it rare or have more value? any senior members knowledgeable in this field i would love to know more.any suggestion on how i can find out more. thanks again:confused:

Here is an 1872H with the same kind of mintmark positioning that your coin seems to have. One should bear in mind that mintmarks during this era were set by hand, so there would be some variation in their positioning.

1872 canada quarter with mint error

thank you very much for your reply. i was unaware of mint marks being hand set. i have never read of it. i assumed they were punched with the rest of the die.maybe the closeness of that pic may be decieving to me. but the H mint mark seems bigger on the coin you pointed out. i could be totally but i like to ask question to learn. thank you for taking the time to help me.
