    CoinTalk,
after several years of school, i finally rummaged into my old coin collection and the spark began again. i bought 6000 wheaties tonight from a guy and after about 100 i ran into this.
Is this the real deal? What do i do if it is?
(SORRY FOR BAD PICS BEST I COULD DO WITH 13x LOOP)

Looks like MD to me, but I'm far from an expert in that category.

On a true 1917 DDO, the date is doubled almost vertical, the horizontal bar of the 7 is almost doubled in thickness, and the split serif of the 9 is easy to see to about G or VG, along with the split serifs of the word "Trust". I have checked over the years several dozen purposed unslabbed '17 DDO on ebay, and all have been MDD. A distinguishing feature to confirm is a strong die scratch from the "U" in Unum on the reverse ( on bottom left curve of U) into the field.

That one looks like MD as well. Just as flat and shelf like as the first one! But as I have been shown I cannot distinguish these I guess.

Cannot see the doubling on this at all.

That is because it is in an advanced state of wear, however, do note that the letters in LIBERTY and the numbers of the date are quite broad from side to side. This is due to the doubled devices wearing at the same rate (true doubled dies have each echo of the doubled device at the same level above the field). They end up looking like "fat" or bold text once heavily worn.

    That's what I say! Man all ddo/ddr coins I have tossed! I can't see it 1/2X when it's visible!
