i went to a flea market near home this morning and found some interesting coins but one has stood out from the rest, if i am right them i have just paid 10p for an ottoman egyptian gold 100 para. the weight and size is corect but before i can definitely say it is the real mc coy i have made an appointment on friday with the curator of coins at manchester university museum to have it authenticated. i will keep you posted...........
just returned from manchester university and it has been confirmed that the coin is an ottoman 100 qirsh not para as i first thought, and it is gold with a possible value of between 5 and 8 hundred pounds. not a bad return for 10 pence. and a massive thank you to richard for his time and the photo he took for me.
Wow, I've never had such luck at flea markets. I don't know if I ever bought anything numismatic at a flea market that was worth even 1.5 times what I paid for it. The luckiest I've gotten is finding a nice 1869 Napoleon III 20 francs in a $10 grab bag of foreign coins I bought at a coin show.
What a fantastic experience this must have been! Unfortunately, nothing will ever excite you ever again in your life. You might find a silver proof coin in your pocket change someday. It will be a nice litle thrill but it won't compare to the thrill when you found that gold coin back in 2011....
