That's just good honest wear Calum. I like the coin very much. I think the picture is great, especially for a camera phone. Sorry I can't help you with the ID.

thanks. the guy i buy them from has a few victoria half crowns that i will probably buy and he knows a lot less about coins then he pretends to so i some times get really good deals from him. even though this one hasnt really a steal its still my favourite coin that i have gotten from him

no i think he is doing his best to rip me off but he just doesnt know enough about coins to do it properly. like he was asking £20 for this but i got him down. but still i dont mind taking advantage of his ignorance lol

I think all Victoria's coins are beautiful, especially the shield halfcrowns like this - very ornate (esp 1887 - 1901) ... thanks for posting!

I don't know what the reference is either, though.

Assuming a condition of F, then 1887-92 are listed at between £5 and £10, with 1892 at £15. For 1893-1901, range £6-£10. Prices from Collector Coins 2008, Rotographic. In Unc, they range mostly around £100, apart from the more common 1887 at £35.

In any case, a set of such halfcrowns will grace and enhance any UK silver collection! (I only have an 1887 and 1895 from Victoria, but I do have all 2/6 from 1906 - 1967, with those from 1910 on in EF or better - but took a while to put them together!)

"p1k5000" sounds like the ident of an Ebay seller.

One wonders whose hands that coin has been through over the years before it was "retired".

    :)
