Any Saint Gaudens double eagle aficionados?

I've been saving to buy one, and was thinking of getting a certified one from Apmex but since the mintage numbers are kind of weird due to meltings and such, I was hoping maybe somebody who has experience with the double eagles could help me out with the best dates to purchase and any other info.

Thanks for the welcome bls! and @ Mpcusa, mainly investment but I would also like a nice coin for my collection, I definately want to purchase a slabbed one though.

 

If you don't know the series my advice is to by a certified (NGC or PCGS) common date example in MS63/64 with a CAC sticker. Heritage has some in every signature sale.

I own only one Saint, but she is a looker.

Welcome to CT CapCity. I love the ST. Gaudens design, in my opinion, it's the most beautiful coin ever made. Nothing has beaten the design. As for purchasing one, I would purchase a certified common date on in MS-63-64 like LeHigh96 said above. Unless you want to invest in a rare date.

I would go to a coin show or coin dealer to buy one, I don't know about everyone else, but Heritage now scares me after being burned on a PVC damaged coin. But PVC damage is less likely on a Gold coin but it's still possible.

 

I love the coin. Too expensive (for me) to own many. I have one, it is being graded now for the 2nd time at PCGS. Keep your fingers crossed.

check Heratage, Northeast Numismatics there are many others out there.
Take your time find whats right for you.

 

I suggest if you are laying out that sort of cash for your first big purchase that you buy certified in person at a coin show or shop so you get the look and quality you want. I've bought bullion and graded coins ( including a graded Saint) from the company you are looking at, and while they provide a good service, don't think you are going to get a gem. They just sell what they get in. Most folks they buy from aren't going to sell them their MS64+ graded Saint for the going price, they are going to sell their MS64- one.

I bought a NGC slabbed MS63, but that was because the cost was almost at parity with bullion and I have others in my collection, so I didn't see a downside.

I will add that the company you are looking at was helpful in accommodating date requests. I said I had certain dates, so if it wasn't too much trouble I'd prefer others that I didn't have and they sent me one I didn't have.

Summed up, buy in person first, but if that is not an option, make sure to let them know you are looking at this for your coin collection, and not for your hoard of precious metals that will end up buried in the back 40.

 

I'm hoping it slabs (I grade it 63 in hand). It came back cleaned the first time.

FWIW, I bought it raw on eBay in 2004ish for around $450 (going from memory).
