Just curious as to what your top 3 favorite U.S.coins would be as to the idea and craftsmanship of the design, eye appeal and overall desirabilty of your top picks.
Probably the Liberty Double Eagle, The Peace Dollar, and the Draped Bust Dollar w/Heraldic Eagle. Honorable Mention: St. Gauden Double Eagle, Morgan Dollar. Bone
I would say (in order) 1. Morgan Dollar 2. Mercury Dime 3. St. Gaudens Double Eagle Honorable Mention Walking Liberty Half (ASE), Standing Liberty Quarter
Kind of a one sided thread here. I think about half the world of collectors like the Morgan dollars. Every coins show I go to that's the one coin everyone talks about. So I'll be different and Say: Mercury Dime Buffalo Nickel Liverty copuble Eagle.
I love the Morgan dollar ... obviously it's the focus of my collection... but I'm hard pressed to say it's because it's the loveliest or best design. I think I woud like the Peace dollar better if it were not that the Peace seems to 'soft' to me. I like the crispness of a good Morgan, but I do not really care for the reverse of it half as much as that of the Peace. The eagle seems poorly executed to me. I think for beauty the Mercury is my top, then the Peace, then the Buffalo nickel. So why the Morgan? I love the history behind the dates as much as the coin design itself and because you can get so many of them in beautiful uncirculated condition.
The eagle on the morgan reverse is actaully quite impressive in high grade and the coin engraves excellently. Its a perfect match of technology and art. The Peace dollar, man they just tried to do too darn much. The strikes suck and the Eagle on the reverse always looks faded. They needed to listen to Barbara more. They tried to make these coins without regard for the mass production. Even the Buffalo Nickel suffers from poor design. The Morgan is nearly perfect. Ruben

Wow, satootoko, really enthusiastic there. Mine- 1. V nickel :thumb: 2. buffalo nickel 3. morgan dollar runner up. st. gaudens double eagle (they would probably be first if I could afford them )
Walking halfs first, nothing else even close. They're art. Morgan dollars and St. Gaudens double eagles next.
HA - I dare to be different. Large Cents (All kinds -Draped Bust), Shield Nickels, Silver Eagles. How can anybody resist these big old brown puppy dog coins in such needy shape . Granted I suck at scanning on my antique PC - cause the dates are all legible to the naked eye. My only three, but always on the lookout for more.
Well I'd have to say the St. Gaudens double eagle, but that's too easy, lol. Among coins I think I'd actually be able to own in my lifetime (and do!), I'd say the Walking Liberty half dollar, buffalo nickel, and Ben Franklin half dollar, with the Morgan dollar being a close 4th for me. Of anything still produced, would have to mention the proof American Platinum Eagles which I wish I could currently afford; love how they've come up with a new reverse design each year. Am hoping platinum cools off a little so I can at least afford to get the 1/10 oz. ones some time.
