I'm new to collecting coins so bear with me if my question is stupid... I saw this nickel in my wallet and it's a 1939 nickel. I was looking at coin pictures online and saw that the 1939-D should have the D on the right side next to Monticello... But the coin I have has the D on top of Monticello, in front of the E of "E PLURIBUS UNUM". I'm attaching a picture of the coin - it's not the best pic... my camera can't zoom any closer or it gets really blurry... the D I'm referring to is the mark at the position between 10 to 11 o'clock near the edge of the coin. Am I just imagining things that there's a D there? Or has anyone seen that the D should appear there instead of on the right edge at 3 o'clock position? Thanks a lot!
Or you could accept the more simple explanation, the coin is a 1939 minted in Philadelphia and has no mintmark. BTW, the only "D" I see is the one scratched into the coin above the dome of Monticello. Must be a 1939 war nickel.
Don't believe that to be a "D" mintmark. Looks like a ding in the coin. its a 1939 P, which has no mintmark. IMO.
Yep, that is just a ding on the coin to the left of the "E" No worries....you need to ask so you can learn.
