Assuming that this coin has not been cleaned, what grade would you give this coin. I would also appreciate any comments regarding its cleaning.

I'd call that a nice 64 and for me, it does not appear to have any indications of cleaning. I would closely examine the MM for foul play .

I'd say EF40. As far as cleaned or not, I can't really tell.

Looks like poor Abe got into a knife fight! I would agree with Merc and say a EF40-45 at best.

You know, I only examined the first photo , and the obverse did not appear to be as nicked and marked as the latter photos indicate . Perhaps you are correct .

    I agree with EF40.

From the pics I would say it has been cleaned, and grade XF-45ish...

My guess is that it was a ground find, and one of those where the soil was not very corrosive. I also think the coin has been in some sort of cleaning solution and then wiped/rubbed with a cloth to help clean it up.

Detail wise I'd say high VF low XF.

I have been hanging around here too long. I had not thought of the ground find, but it is possible. The rest of it I agree with except the XF part. With all those marks, I cannot see it going that high. I realize that it is hard to tell from pictures, but I also believe that the streaks come from somebody using Deller's Darkener on the coin

RLM, it's a shame with that coin too. It's sad to see how much of a difference the pictures you took vice the "professional pictures" as indicated by the seller..

I think the streaking that is seen is possibly (probably?) related to the original planchet - i.e., a "woody".

I also see some wear on Abe's cheek and jaw as well as other spots so it is definitely not MS in my opinion. Based on wear alone, I'd say it's in the AU category but then there's the marks that others have mentioned. I'd probably go AU-50 on this - but the marks make it kinda tough.

I'd say VF-30 (and it appears to have cleaning or cabinet abrasion on the obverse). Looks like I'm the French judge in this thread.

Make no mistake Dick, I don't think the coin would ever be graded. I am merely talking about the amount of detail that the coin has - not its grade. It has no grade and never could have IMO.

VF-35 from what I can see.

VF-30/35 not an EF coin. Cleaned, retoned and damaged. This is a $20 coin, the sellers pictures were juiced. OUCH at $107!

I'll go out on a limb and say XF-45. The reverse is MS grade but the obverse is low XF. Abe's ear is very worn and so is his
clothing on his shoulder. The rim's are great on both sides though. Looks like he had a mud bath and it didn't all come offf.

Nope! $1.48 for return postage and a case files against him to recover the restocking fee. Why he insists of fighting it escapes me.

At first glance, I thought the coin to be UNC , but after further review of your photo's ( which I did not take time to look at initially ) , I have to agree with the general consensus . I have sent the Seller a request to explain how they justify suggesting it grades AU/UNC . Very interesting . Another over-graded EBAY Coin .

Whew....$107 would have been crazy. I looks like he had a few more crappy coins with juiced pics and over-graded he was selling too. Stay far, far away from this seller.
