i found this coin. its from 1789. looks like a medal. AU on the observe side says "George Washington President of the United Sates 1789" Observe:http://www.photodump.com/viewer/Kc/head.html on the reverse side says "United States Mint Philadelphia 1792-1971" Reverse:http://www.photodump.com/viewer/Kc/tail.html any information?how much does it worth? Thanks Kc
Obviously not, with the reverse dates. That was the first year of Washington's first term, immediately following ratification of the Constitution. It doesn't seem to be a U.S. Mint medal, as it is not listed here or here (3rd item) It's probably from one of the many private mints that do "collectible" series. I don't see any hallmarks or engraver initials, but you should check the edge for a possible incuse inscription. If it is gold, it's worth at least the melt value - if it's just a gold-colored base metal, it probably isn't worth more than a couple of bucks.
Correction, this is a U.S. Mint Medal and is still being sold by the U.S. Mint for $2.75. FYI, Gasparro was the engraver at the mint at the time this medal would have originally been made, in 1971. Check out: http://catalog.usmint.gov/wcs/wcs_c...ay&querystring=prnbr;705+prmenbr;1000,00.html
Well, I learned a valuable lesson from this - When researching mint-issue medals, look at the pictures, not just the name. I sure didn't connect "First Coinage Bronze Medal" with the pictures in the original post, but there it is, the second item in the first link I posted.
